Ha... Shirley's cat has found a way to look cute in a spot that's warm and helpfully in the middle of the action. Guessing a young male?

Yes, Doug - a young male, a very smoochy male, and appropriately named Pixel. He hangs around the keyboard because that is where my hands are and Pixel wants to be petted and scratched.

I think cats are the best animals. I read a comment the other day which said that cats are the only animal that was not domesticated by humans - instead, cats decided to domesticate themselves. Sounds about right.
I love the way my little girl (pictured here) sits on my chest when I am laying on my back reading - all to prevent me from paying attention to the book rather than paying attention to her. How she lays in the curve of my arm when I am working at my desk on the computer and how she talks to me incessantly when she wants something (she is half Siamese and hence very vocal). I love how in cold weather she paws at my jacket or jumper (all the time making little noises that sound like a cross between a grunt and a purr) as she begs me to be let inside where she can curl up and sleep in the warmth of my body. I love the way she waits for me on her favourite rug when I get home from work, and rolls on her back for her tummy to be scratched. I love the way at bedtime, she suddenly decides its time to play and hides under the bed to ambush me as I walk past in bare feet. All very cat-like and wonderful. And I love how a healthy cat smells. Dogs, even the most clean and healthy ones, stink. Cats do not. If anything they smell like a human baby. All designed cleverly by evolution, perhaps, to provoke parenting behaviour in humans who dutifully then feel they must care for their loved cats.
Most of all I love that fact that when a dog loves you it treats you like a god! But when a cat loves you it instead treats you like you are a member of its own family and curls up with you like a purring ball of fur. Just the way they do with their siblings when they are still kittens. The cat's bum in the face is not quite so nice but its still part of the package experience of having a cat love you and honour you with her demand for your attention.
Another article I read recently said that scientists have tested the blood of pet animals (including cats) after they had interacted with their favourite humans and found that the blood tests revealed high levels of hormones such as serotonin, oxytocin, and vasopressin - the same chemicals associated with blissful happiness and bonding that is found in the blood of humans when they are in love with another human. The animals, they concluded are in love with their humans. I would say the feeling is mutual!

Peter, lovely photos and excellent commentary. Much is in common with my small-size Cinnamon who kneads and nurses on my front, and must be held so that using the computer is a one-armed affair.

Other things to remember about your cat:
If you die at home, they will eat you.
On the other hand, your dog would rather starve then eat your remains.
That's OK by me. My cat and I have a deal. If I am dead and she is starving she can eat me. If I am starving I can eat her. Its an arrangement we have - a kind of Kentucky stand-off.
But we just watch each other very closely.

Haw!
Other things to remember about cats, they generally do love us, but they also tend to see as big stupid cats. This is one of the reasons they bring us "gifts" since we don't seem to have the hunting skills to stalk and kill small animals that all cats should have!
http://www.livescience.com/34471-ca...hat I still think she is plotting to kill me.
