Mike, that seems a lot of people waiting to photograph what looks like an ordinary train - is there something special about it? Vintage train, perhaps?

Hi Lynn,

You’re right, the train is not what’s so special it’s the Kawazu Sakura trees to the right of the train that are the attraction. The Kawazu Sakura are an early blooming variety of cherry blossom trees originally from the Izu peninsula and they bloom much earlier than the more common variety found all over Japan.

Train enthusiasts love to get the picture of the train running past the trees. The train company even slows down the trains by that short stretch of trees so that the people inside the train can enjoy viewing the blossoms. It’s actually a big deal.

I was done for the day. Riding the train back home I was sitting opposite a couple little girls that were obviously very good friends. They kept laughing and having such terrific fun.

One of them said something that was so funny they convulsed with laughter.

If one could put the joy and friendship these two share into a bottle of medicine it would certainly be a cure for the blues.

With the lock #1 gate open, the crane barge coming in behind us barely squeezes into the lock... Our lock #2 is nearly full of water now and we’ll soon move to #3.

Huge automobile carrier Höegh Berlin is about as big as will fit into the locks, thus the “Panamax” term for its size. The crane/barge Titan has risen into the second lock behind us, as we move toward Lake Gatun.
