W/NW: Trains and Train Stations

St%20Pancras.jpg

On the left InterCity trains from the midlands and on the right a Eurostar train for Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam. It's a long and tedious walk from one to the other, especially with luggage and the main reason for it seems to be a shopping mall; as if there aren't enough of them already...

David, is it a station in London?

I hate shopping malls, they seem to be the bosses of the municipalities.

Erik.
Hi,

It's St Pancras, one of the stations to the North of the City of London. About 25 minutes walk from St Paul's Cathedral and heading north-ish.

To fit in a mall they cut the rails short and now the trains for the UK stop well outside the old station under the roof you see in my photo. There's a picture (not mine) showing the hole cut where they used to stop and the mall etc here:-

It was one of the last Victorian stations to be built and was functional and exciting as it had a huge wide roof. I could rant for hours about what they've done that ruined it but a search might just show what it was like.

Regards, David

PS And the trains are not much better, I've used Business Premier class (free Champagne etc) and standard (riff-raff) and the older ones were superior in many ways.

Watching the express trains fly by while we wait for the local slow poke train to stop for us.
