It looks like I'm going to get a new domain name for a website on which to display some photos (mostly street, but also commercial stuff like portraits and architecture, all in black and white, and the occasional color shot for a book cover). Most photographers just use their name, as in, johnsmithphoto.com, but since nobody can spell my name, I'm not planning to uphold this tradition.

---rambling ahead---feel free to skip this part---
Some years ago, I registered the domain r-owl.com for a website featuring my poetry and prose. As my interests turned to photography, the site grew to include my efforts in that medium, and soon turned into a big mess. This summer, I removed everything and put up a temporary front, which I've been too lazy to update so far. Since it looks like the website is heading in the direction of commercial photography, I think the domain name is no longer appropriate, and I want to restore r-owl.com for writings only, and get a catchier domain name for the photography. This should also give me more initiative to finally update it.
---end rambling---

To give you an idea of the lines along which I've been thinking, two names I toyed with for a while were:

1) retrofocus.com

I like the "retrofocus" name because it implies focusing the retro way; i.e., by hand, rather than relying on autofocus. The problem with this name is that, to the knowledgable, "retrofocus" is the construction type of mostly SLR lenses, which is exactly the type of equipment I never use nowadays.

2) magicroll.com

Magic rolls (i.e., 36-exposure rolls with a disproportionately high amount of keepers) are what keep me going in the face of despair. Most of my best photos are from the same few rolls. The problem with this name is that it's pretty damn pretentious! Also, I dislike the association of photography with magic (à la Laterna Magica etc.).

So, feel free to throw in any ideas! If I end up using (or being inspired by) your suggestion, you'll be credited on the new site of course. 🙂

Well, I don't like magicroll because it can be pronounced as "magi croll" on first reading. Retrofocus is cool but does have SLR overtones.
If I could think of anything real cool, I'd use it myself, sorry.

I like retrofocus.. I don't feel the magic of magicroll, though.. it sounds too gimmicky and has no connection to photography for the typical guy on the street

if/when I put up a photography site, I'd probably have to name it indecisivemoment.com

I thought about this for a while, how about Hoot.com, easy to remember and catchy as well.

I liked retrofocus, but since it's already taken, why not try "retro-focus" or "retrophocus" or "retrofokiss" or some other variant.

When I see magicroll, for some odd reason it makes me think Magic Troll. Yes, I'm weird.

photopost.something?

postphoto?

photosmart?

photobam?

photowham?

I dont think I could live with a name that I myself didnt come up with. Because of this I will recommend that you stick yourself in an isolation chamber, bring a snack, some tea, and a notepad, and figure out a name on your own!

I'd be inclined to go with einolu's suggestion. Open a Word doc, type in every .com you can think of. Take these guy's suggestions and work around them. When you're tapped out, narrow it down to 8-10 and get your best friend's input. You're creative. Go with what YOU like.

good luck.. I've been trying to come up with a catchy, but generic name for a website for a month.. it's hard to come up with ANYTHING that's not already registered.. even nonsensical words are frequently taken

of course you're not limited to .com domains.. you could set up one as a .net or .org or even .biz

You're going to get lots of tangents; you do need to do what Einolu suggested. I would also suggest mixing around the names you already had selected, since one of them was already taken. Who knows, it may be double the fun.

Hi Ronnie!

How much did Joker.com charge you to register r-owl.com?
Godaddy.com is the best IMHO! You can check names for availability also! 🙂
https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/default.asp

Since most of your customers speak German, I suggest using German words or a combination of English and German for your dot com.
I checked these and at this time they ARE available:

RANGEFINDERFOTO.COM
VIENNAFOTO.COM
STRASSEFOTO.COM
FOTOSFOTOSFOTOS.COM

Good Luck!

R.J.
