I found a Canon 7 with a canon 0.95 lens for a great price and i like to ask you guys some questions before i buy.

Seller say that the shutter is from titanium but as i have search in the internet all shutters was made from steel. Cameras Serial is : 980048
Second there is fungus as you see in the photo

what are your opinions?

Peter Dechert states in his book about Canon rangefinder cameras that the Canon 7 had stainless steel shutter curtains. Maybe the seller is confusing the Canon with the later production Nikon SP rangefinders that were made with titanium curtains.

Karen Nakamura, in her write-up on the Canon 7, mentions that there is a Japanese company that will replace the 7's stainless steel shutter with a titanium shutter. Not cheap though, at about $500.00. But to answer your question, yes, it is possible this camera has a titanium shutter.

thanks for the help. Is there any way to know for sure if the shutter is really steel or titanium?
and what you think about the fungus in the lens? The Price is low for this kit but still i like to know 🙂Here the only photo that i have from the shutter

Sure looks like a stainless steel shutter. Out of all of the 7's built, I got to believe that only a handful (less than 50?) had their cameras changed to a titanium shutter. Whatever, the shutter pictured is in very good condition.

No it dosent matter as long as its work but i like to know if this really one and about the fungus on the lens so i know if the price he is asking is oki or not.

The steel shutters may wrinkle, but they do the job well enough. Unless you plan on leaving the camera to your grandkids it's probably not necessary to replace them with titanium or anything else.

I see scratches on the lens, not sure about fungi. But they look quite bad.
My sample of 50/0.95 has lighter scratches/cleaning marks and works well, but your situation is definitely worse. Buy the body and leave the lens to the seller, if possible...

Personally I would not use that lens; it's in pretty bad condition. Those look like scratches (not fungus) and the resulting images would probably be hazy and or susceptible to flare.

Do you have any other screw-mount lenses you could use instead?

I had a lens with similar marks on the inside of the glass, and it looks as though your lens has the same kind of marks. Someone probably opened the lens to clean the insides of the elements and probably used something which damaged the coating (which is softer on the inner elements).

With my lens I ended up polishing away the coating leaving the bare glass. Removing the coating can increase flare, but the effects of the coating damage visible in your lens would cause much worse effects.

From your photo, the lens looks awful - serious scratches, more serious than fungus issue. I think this lens is useless for picture taking.

In addition to the scratches, it looks there is fungus at the circumference of the front lens. DON'T BUY that lens. The camera looks good though!

That lens looks like toast to me. I would pass on it myself, but others may be able to save the lens. Besides, I'd never buy a 7 if there was a P around instead...

Out of curiosity, how much was being asked for the lens/combo ? I buy beater lenses from time to time if the price is right and have been surprised with the results on all occasions. My Elmar 90/4 with fungus/etching takes beautiful pictures, as does my Industar 52/2.8 (despite having scratches in the front and back elements, rarely used though due to speed/build issues).

I'd get the 50/.95 if cheap enough just to play around with and see if a buddy of mine could bring it to work and maybe have it improved a little. Doesn't look very usable in it's current state though
