Waterproof camera that shoots RAW?

Fly fishing this weekend and wanted to bring a camera but my balance isn't what it used to be.

Is there a waterproof camera that acquires in RAW and not only JPEG?

The Epic is NOT waterproof. It's has some weatherproofing, but I wouldn't use it in heavy rain.

The WP-1 is waterproof up to a certain point—I can't remember the depth. You can get them for about $10.

The WP-1's lens and autofocus are actually phenomenal. I really love that camera. Here's one of my shots with it:



You can also get a full-blown Nikonos system for less than a point and shoot digital these days.

I have not found one. I assume you are looking at point and shoot that will fit a fishing vest or go in a chest pack. How about an Ewa-Marine soft case. They are waterproof and the fit just about any camera. They make them for SLR and point and shoot body type cameras. Reasonably cheap and if you already have a camera that shoots raw and suitable for wading a trout stream, then you could get a case pretty cheap.

If you have a Canon p&s, you can add software to your memory card that allows use of RAW files for many of the models. Just add the waterproof case. Go to the CHDK website to download the software. I've done it for a Canon A710.

The new Olympus OM-D E-M5 with the 12-50mm is weather sealed. If all you are worried about is a quick dunk, I think there are videos out there of this camera (and other Oly weather proof models) being dunked in a bucket of water and continued to be used.

Good luck finding one in stock by this weekend though 🙂

I know like the WP-1 it is not digital but Canon made a 10 foot down camera with flash. It was call the AS-6, and I would not buy it (used only). They are decked out with all the finders, close up attachments, semi-water proof case for snorkeling, but the camera is garbage. The flash is hit and miss and it is fixed focus, it does have auto advance and DX but the lens is bad. Here is my best shot with it:

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I want to stick with digital as this would be easier to share among friends.

To me RAW would be of primary importance so I can adjust white balance and exposure. Thanks for the info on CHDK and the Canon D10. That may be the best option at this point. Going on the Canon website, I see they have a D20 but it's back ordered.

Hi, Mr. VMC226,

I recently purchased a waterproof case off Amazon, to house the Canon PowerShot G12 (that I already owned), and the G12 shoots JPG, RAW, or both JPG/RAW. And I just plain like the G12, anyway.

So...perhaps choose a camera that you already own or would like to own..and consider adding a waterproof housing for two or three hundred dollars. (The whole thing is the size of a DSLR, though...ugh.)

I'm sure you already thought of all this. It's just the path I took.

I also have the Canon WP1, but under another name - Sureshot A1 (USA). Taken on many trips by me and my family, with great results. The only problem was when people started making fun of my kids on teen tours for using a "toy" camera - the kids then wanted "real" cameras which were not necessarily as good and which certainly couldn't be used under the adverse conditions that they encountered on the tours. Also they didn't have to worry about anyone stealing the camera as everyone else thought that it was not worth taking, but teens being teens, they still wanted "better" cameras to fit in with the crowd. Still used by me in the rain.

Thanks, I might toss my AS-6 for a WP-1. Even Canon could improve on the one I have.
