Interestingly enough, the head-word in the OED is actually 'shammy'. The origin is of course, as you pointed out, the french word 'chamois', and 'shammy' is a phonetic spelling of this word.

Well, you could try using a plistic bug or worterprof howsing, or, for ultimate drynosity, don't ever take your camera out in the reign... (!)

Like Roger I have used my Leica's in heavy rain without any problems. Be sensible, don't let it steam up by keeping it too warm and close to the body (putting it into a camera bag is better than under a coat), and have an absorbent cloth ready to wipe the heavy raindrops off when a chance arises. Mine was used alongside my Nikon F (and F2's) which are also not weather sealed, and the Leica's from M2 to M6 (and including a M4-P) have been faultless in bad weather (as has been more recently an M9).

I have heard of people using a clear shower cap to cover their camera in occassional rain. The nice thing about a shower cap is that it takes up almost no space in your pocket or bag.
My whole childhood was shot with a Nikonos Calypso. Despite weighing as much as a toolbox it is a brilliant camera. I never found it to be difficult to service. Quite the contrary! It's entire service life was spent in the bayou, on beaches, except for when we uaed it in swimming pools, on whitewater kayaking trips, or diving in the Bahamas and Central America.
My Pop was always worried that something bad would happen to his lens, like send it in to be serviced and have it return with an inferior lens. He loves this glass! Last x-mas I got him a second lens for $10, shipping included. It is a great camera.
