Weekend Photography Plans: What are you up to?

Visited an Italian bakery and several Italian gourmet food shops at Federal Hill in Providence, RI. Picked up some Italian torrone, vittles, etc.

Always excellent Italian food and vibe at Federal Hill. Long lines at the shops today but folks were polite and in a festive mood. 🎄 🎅

OMG, I know that shop so well! When we lived in RI, everyone knew that a gift certificate was all they ever needed to give us. I so clearly remember the grilled olives, and the cannoli, fresh hot wandas, etc. etc. Thank you for these memories!

Not the weekend, but Christmas is nearly upon us. It's currently the 23rd of December in Australia, and tonight I'm out with a friend for a long overdue Malaysian dinner, then final late night shopping. The late night shopping isn't really about buying things, but the experience of going out at night amidst the pre-Christmas bustle, and the quietude of a department store in the wee hours of the morning. Christmas will be a simple and happy family affair as usual. Boxing Day will bring lunch with friends, and so on until New Year's Eve.

Dinner tonight: Panasonic GX85 with Olympus 17/1.8

Late night shopping: GX85 and Sony RX0

Christmas Day: Panasonic S5 with Zeiss Distagon 35/1.4 ZM

I had a dam good time this weekend (Shima dam in the background) :).
We visited Shima Onsen in Gunma Prefecture.

We were there from Thursday 19 Dec ~ Saturday 21 Dec, 2024. The place is in the middle of nowhere, but the hot spring baths are outstanding and the hotel was great.

A terrific dinning experience.

You're welcome @Retro-Grouch. For those who may visit Providence and the Federal Hill area - and want some good recommendations for Italian prepared food, takeout, baked goods, supplies and groceries - check out:
There are also many more shops in the area to discover...

In Army jargon, when I was in, "F'ed up like a T-5" was common to describe someone who was really incompetent and dangerous, unable to execute their MOS (job). So I had a real chuckle when I saw the two T-5 stripes in your collection. I am guessing that the technical training made T-5's seem remote from the rest of the gun carrying "grunts". And a T-5's job was cushier so there would be envy involved, too.

That's a marvelous collection. Thanks for posting it. ;o)

Hah, anyone that read a manual was basically T-5 material. There was some joke about the army being run by technical corporals, but I can't remember how it goes.

Within the Signal Photographic Companies; photographers generally had the rank of Tech-5 and mopic men were Tech-4.

Up in PDX today for an eye checkup. And swung by my favorite dim-sum joint for yamcha. This is the favorite of the Chinese community, too. If it has grandma outside on the sidewalk with the rest of the family of Saturday waiting for a table, it is good, And I have seen grandmas out on the sidewalk waiting for tables. And do not take grandma to a place that is not the best because she will tell you out loud, quite load. Bring grandma to the best. This is the Hong Kong Cafe, Portland, OR. It was late in the day so we skipped juk and jumped right into dumplings, pork, the dark ones in wheat noodle wrappers, and shrimp in the rice noodle wrappers. So good, so damned good.

If I were there, I think my schedule might be:
Bath -> Great dinner -> Bath -> Bedtime
And so on!

Yum! I can practically taste them. Would they be considered American-Cantonese? Closest I ever came to the taste of old-school USA Cantonese restaurants in China was in HK, but even then, I recall the flavors being somewhat different.

I have done yamcha in the SF Bay Area, HK and PRC. This place is very close to being in HK. Not quite as loud and bright, you know what I mean, and the service not quite as fast. But we were there from a little after noon on, late for yamcha. And not by the kitchen door, the best spot. The carts stop at 3:00 and have really tapered off by 2:15. Next time, early. Roast duck, soft noodles stuffed with shrimp, Bok Choy, and some other stuff. Kuh-bo (Chrysanthemum-bole) tea. I just go nuts in a dim-sum joint.

In HK and PRC I was traveling with a Chinese couple, friends, and on an overseas Chinese tour. In PRC there are three kinds of people: PRC Chinese, Overseas Chinese, Others. We were lucky that the couple we traveled with ordered the tour in Cantonese so they did not know there were quailoh in the group. It was great. I didn't care if I ever ate western food again. 1988. I was so lucky to get to tag along on that trip. About a month altogether. Just insanely great food and I learned about Fire PIg. Woohoo!!!

Flavors. Flavors vary from restaurant (tea house) to restaurant everywhere. Some good, some bad, some better. This is where the Portland area Chinese do yamcha. It is the best for, I do not know, from there to Seattle maybe? Seattle should be good, too. It was great. You know. ;o)

We have a warm air front today with 68F temperatures but tomorrow evening a cold front will arrive here and five days the lows will be in the mid 20’s. There is also rain today. I don’t have photography on my mind.
