Won't happen, since Fuji isn't selling M-mount lenses.
Fuji certainly could start making them. The M mount can be used by anyone.

Yes, sure, you're right, they could. I just don't think they will.
I would not if I were Fuji; there already are 2 bigger names in the market (Leica, Zeiss) and a business associate (Cosina) manufactures very good but reasonably priced lenses.
Also from what I've understood M-mount rules out autofocus. I'm under the impression that autofocus engines finally are starting to get good, so they'll want to use one, I guess.

And I can see lots of people complaining on the Internets about what a fatal design flaw that is, because, you know, their Nikon D3 has autofocus and it's better, etc. etc. and shame on Lei...err...on Fuji!

Sounds like a digital Contax G2??? Full-frame, interchangeable jewel-like lenses, AF/AE, compact, "modern" take on a classic?
I'd buy one. And with a cool hybrid finder, I'd also take a 21mm, 35mm, and 50mm

It sure is nice fantasizing about it, but it won't happen any time soon - Leicas Japan affiliations are elsewhere, and Fuji could not do it without cooperation/licenses from Leica. A hybrid electronic viewfinder has to compensate for the finder/live view parallax, and for that it will require knowledge about the lens and its settings. Leica lenses only recently grew the capability to identify themselves to the camera - that will be patented for quite a few years to come.

I don't want AF, a hybrid viewfinder or movie mode or anything like that though. I would just like a cheaper, digital M.

If sony can put together the NEX-7 for $1200, I'm sure they could make a similar camera with and optical rangefinder for under $2k. I just don't think anyone will–I don't think that they see a market for it. Definitely not Sony, unless they could turn it into some kind of market-speak, like "TRUVIEW INFINITY OF" or something like that.
I like the fuji hybrid vf idea, and hopefully it will move forward in future iterations of the x series... but I don't expect anyone aside from Leica can sell a lot of cameras that are totally manual focus, M or whatever mount these days. And that's part of why they're so expensive...

I own a Contax G1, no need for an M Mount camera... BUT, Fuji M mount lenses... Bring it on... I'll use those on my Panasonic G3.

It would a fun product, options are always good. Give the Epson folks some where to go other than an M8. Would I buy one, no. Strange as it sounds I'm happy with my GRD III. I wonder if they are talking with Pres. K about a Bessa body update?

We get this kind of discussion every two weeks or so. Is there an "Ignore Thread" option that will make these things vanish from the front page?

I don't see why Fuji could not make a M-mount camera, hypothetically. Cosina make M-mount cameras and I don't think they pay anything to Leica. Ricoh just made a M-mount module and they don't pay anything. So why would Fuji?

M8s are $2000. How much cheaper do you think a new one is going to be?

An M8 wasn't $2000 when new. They certainly dont have the sensor performance of any new camera either.

No one cares what they cost when new. Now they're a $2000 digital M. That's what counts.
If you want more than that, expect to pay more than that. Take a look at Fuji's medium format rangefinder pricing to see what happens when a camera won't sell in large numbers.
If people want their pipe dream digital rangefinder of the day to have better sensor performance, a larger sensor, a hybrid viewfinder and be cheaper - well, they better prepare to get laughed out of the door.
