What are the worst words in photography?

I have a friend I visit frequently at his house on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. I took what I thought is a very nice b & w shot of the view of the bay from his house. So I made a 10x12 print, matted and framed it, wrapped it up as a Christmas gift and gave it to him this past Sunday. He opened it and with a puzzled look on his face said, " But it's black and white. I thought you had a really good camera."

My wife explained that black and white film is what I like to shoot. His wife said 'Well I like it. I think it is really pretty". I think she meant despite being black and white. He just sat there with a puzzled look and I decided that for the sake of harmony the rest of the visit the best thing to do was to stay silent. However, I think he will be receiving some more b&w's in the future.

jwmash1, I think that black and white photography is ill-understood. And then there's black and white landscape photography. "But all those nice blues, and the boat with the red sail in the bay....are you just being perverse?" Difficult. I take it you actually do have a really good camera...??

I shoot 4x5 as well as Leica so I hear some odd comments

Did you not get it with the big one?

You must be a pro, can you take a snapshot of us with our iphone (in this bad lighting and hats creating shadows on our faces)?

"You have to take lots of shots to get a good one". (Some of us actually take our time and try to take only the good ones - its called pre-editing. We manage to screw up the film in other ways, like forgetting to set the aperture after focusing, wrong shutter speed, forgetting to pull the slide, and processing errors.)

After discussing the joys and tribulations of shooting film in a digital world and how I spent countless hours on a print so it matches my vision, old formerly professional film portrait photographer says "I can fix that in photoshop if you want more contrast". To which my only comeback was "Then it would look like all the other digital internet pictures out there".

"I'll have to see some ID..." or almost anything said by the young cop who thinks he's just nabbed some lone-wolf terrorist when all I've done is set up my tripod to take long-exposure pics of some peeling sign or vacant storefront on a foggy night in the wrong part of town.

My parents would have liked a Leica clone. Growing up, everything in the house was a knockoff or clone of some better-known (IE, more expensive or better quality) item.
