I've been listening to Janelle Monae's Archandroid all week. I haven't been this impressed by a pop act since... I don't know... maybe since I was a teenager.
I heard the song "Locked Inside" on NPR in the car and repeated the name to myself until I got home so I could find out more. It's sort of like Off the Wall Michael Jackson mixed with Stevie Wonder with guitars from Santana. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbF5s9G-6_s
I saw her performance on Letterman and I was amazed at what a showman she is, and how out of the mold for a black female artist she is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4piDHgm_rs
But the genres she throws out are so diverse. From the Carpenters to wild indie experiments with Of Montreal. This is a Hendrix psychedelic jam here in "Mushrooms and Roses" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTOL-DVW5tA
I'm listening to the swearing of someone who would much rather be elsewhere, doing something far more productive; and I have the sneaking suspicion that that someone is me.
Right now I'm listening to the Manic Street Preachers 'Everything Must Go'. I was really into them in the early to mid 90s. Then, like most of the stuff I listened to as a teenager, I inexplicably stopped listening to it. It's great to return to those sounds of your teens. 'Generation Terrorists' is a particularly fine album.
Out of curiosity (and I wonder whether this merits a poll) how many RFFers are vinyl aficionados?
