What are you listening to at the moment?

Jerry Moss, cofounder with Herb Alpert of A&M records passed away yesterday at the age of 88. This is probably of little interest to most RFF members but it does sadden me.

I have a pretty big music collection and a significant chunk of my collection is from A&M recording artists.

If you're not familiar with Jerry Moss and you're interested read this in the LA Times

Now listening to Joe Cocker, "Up where we belong"

RIP Jerry,

Mike
I am spinning a 45 RPM mono 45, of Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round In Circles". On my Technics SL-1200 Mk II in black, Reloop/Ortofon Concorde Black connected to a McIntosh MA 6100 integrated amplifier, driving Dynaco A-25 loudspeakers. And one Adaptive AM/FM DJ operator/Studio Engineer running his show live.

Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers

I have a few of her CDs, actually she only made a few CDs... not important, she swings!

My wife and I saw her perform live at Enrico's Sidewalk Café in San Francisco. Regrettably Enrico's is no longer in business.

All the best,
Mike

I do not know if anyone here got into the British crime drama "Endeavor". Set in the 1960's predominantly, it is a prequel to the "Inspector Morse" series and draws heavily on its setting (Oxford) and uses classical music as well as classically inspired music a great deal for atmosphere. Here the London Metropolitan Orchestra records a number of tracks for the final season and final episode of the series. Very beautiful.

Absolutely brilliant series ... I never really got into Inspector Morse because I'm not really a John Thaw fan. Sean Evans however was a perfect fit as a young Morse for me and I was mesmerised for the entire series. Great ending I thought. Abegaile Thaw as Dorothea Frazil was a clever piece of casting and I loved their first meeeting and her comment that she thought she may have met him before. Such subtle humour in the writing! :)

I agree. I never got into Morse at all and after one or two attempts to watch an episode or two I let it go. I thought John Thaw was OK in Kavanagh QC though I never really followed that either, though I did feel that he fitted that role better and overall did not mind it (In general, I am not a TV series follower at all). But Endeavor was a different kettle of fish and was simply captivating - a mix of the actors, the storylines, the setting and the music I think. Plus nostalgia of course.

You are obviously familiar with the series and the series ending but I am not sure if you have seen this video of parts of that final episode. Very moving and cleverly done.

My wife and I are currently on season 8 of the series. Great stuff. Always entertaining and very different for a crime show. We got the first 8 seasons free on Amazon Prime. I will have to pay for season 9, but that is no problem at all. Excellent show.

What! negative comments about John Thaw as Inspector Morse... shocking!

Nobody plays a flawed character better than John Thaw as Morse.

I'm also a big fan of Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox in the "Lewis" series.

All the best, :)
Mike

I don't mind John Thaw but for some reason he didn't work for me as Morse. I tried and watched the first two seasons but then drifted away! :)

Loved "Morse", loved "Lewis", love "Endeavor". Actually, my wife and I are into the whole genre and the various branches. Right now we're into the Australian series "Dr Blake Mysteries". Addicting. I now understand how my mother could have become so in love with her soap operas.

I got into Scandi Noir a while ago ... they make some seriously good TV. The Danish/Swedish series 'The Bridge' is probably one of the best things I have ever seen followed closely by another Danish series called 'The Killing.'

Yep...we've watched those as well. "The Bridge" was/is outstanding.

I love them all but had not heard of the Dr. Blake Mysteries. Thanks! I also recommend these two BBC series based on John Le Carre's novels:
- Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
- Smiley's People
Both series star Alec Guinness and are available on YouTube. Cheers, OtL
