What do you all pack on a road trip?

For very long trips (>3weeks) I bring most of the gear I have. 4-5 lenses and two bodies, a filter kit and tripod. But I make sure I can fit everything in a large backpack. If I anticipate beautiful landscapes, I might instead carry a medium format kit and leave my M lenses behind...

For shorter trips, a camera and two lenses is all I need. Usually a 50 and a super-wide.

Interesting to see so many MF photographers (particularly only MF) here. Kind of makes me want to get a Fujica just to cut down on weight when I do bring it. I see a few also share my 'if you have a car, why not bring everything?" philosophy; I was curious if I was the only one, especially on a forum dedicated to small, portable cameras.

So then, how much film do you pack, and do you go with both BW and color? A few of you might recall my twin travel sagas earlier this year--the first, where I ended up in Philadelphia after the closure of Calumet and couldn't find film anywhere, and the second where I was in SF with a dead M8 a day into the trip. Sometimes I can't trust either anymore, so both come if I'm backpacking it, at least.

Thanks for the reading material!
So that's not you pictured in your avatar.😛

No, that's a local alcoholic in my village. 😀

Well, jokes aside we all have our sins, but despite this in the inside he's a very inspiring person for me, a Chernobyl veteran, an ex-photographer himself who used to shoot large format, we always find a strange philosophical yet a common language in photography when we meet. That's the story of my avatar. 🙂

Goes a bit together I'd say, people willing to lug MF around will hardly care about a lens or accessory more or less. But I don't see the need to bring "everything", I still have to be able to get in the car with more than a change of underwear 😀

As said I take 50 rolls along because it is impossible to find shops that stock film these days. Also no need to spend time looking for it instead of enjoying the trip. Normally I use about 20-30 rolls of it. Depends on what comes along. Just take 5 rolls along for the day and restock in the evening.

Only use colour slide for traveling. Until now even a single film, Provia 400X. But as this is discontinued I took a mix of 400X and 100F along this time, using the 400X only inside or in the evening. Made a lot of measuring mistakes the first days.

Took a mix of b&w and colour once and found it a hassle. It is one more irreversible decision to make on the spot.

If I'm off on a long road trip by car, I'll carry a lot. Exactly what depends on my whim at packing time.

But more normally, like now on this trip to Hawaii for a week, my typical kit is a body and a three lens kit covering 24-35, 40-60, and 85-135 mm equivalent FoV. On this trip, the body happens to be a Sony A7 and the lenses 24/50/90 all Leica R. I try to keep things compact and light.
