What do you Collect?

When I first started collecting cameras, the only real criteria was "old and cheap". I've since moved towards getting cameras that I can actually use, but I'm willing to break with that if I find something that is a nice little slice of zeitgeist. I love old quirky cameras are dripping with outdated style. If it was made this side of 1970, it generally won't interest me as a collectable.

Other than that, I've accumulated a fair bit of militaria from both World Wars.

I collect both of the above as historical objects, not as investments. While it would be nice if things increased in value, it's often moot since I can very seldom bring myself to sell anything. I'll nearly always find a reason to talk myself into keeping whatever it is.

Speaking of collecting, I've been intrigued by your avatar, what kind of camera is that? looks like a 35mm with waist-level-finder... looks neat, do you have other pictures of it?
 
I strenuously deny collecting cameras and have no idea what you lot are on about. I re-home (mostly) old russian lenses. Most former owners, however, foisted a camera on me as part of the deal, something I had to accept, reluctantly. :angel:
 
Cameras: Golden Era (1950's) rangefinder cameras, Nikonos, and Nikon F gear.
Bicycles: vintage Campagnolo and Mavic parts, and some French parts; bike racing memorabilia
Watches: mechanical wristwatches; SWATCH watches
Postcards: jazz, cycling, motor car
Books: photography, architecture, design, and bicycle racing
Other: bow ties, jazz lps, eyeglasses, Ovadafut socks, and fountain pens

I am not a 100% collector, because I do not collect with a system and do not feel the urge to have some set complete. I "collect" what I find interesting: SLRs, viewfinder and rangefinder cams, lenses, DSLRs, TLRs, even compact digital cams. And I use all that stuff, some thing more than others, but I do not own a single item that I have not used.
 
I was once invited for dinner to a billionaire in Potomac, Virginia. She showed me her art collection, walls full of Picassos, Matisse ... and asked me "So what do you collect?" When I said "Nothing" she gave me a disapproving look and said "You don't care about art??", completely dismissing the idea that some people might not have enough money to collect anything.

I inherated it from my uncle when he passed away.(no one else in family wanted it), Bunch of Sun label stuff. I get a big laugh looking up the value of this stuff. I have a Sun label 45 by James Cotton, and Goldmine says it's Extreamly Rare and says it's worth $900 to $1000. Who'se going to buy this stuff? Give me a break!

I'm sure if a non camera collector found out what some lens hoods go for, they'd think a $1000 record is a bargain!

Me, I have a small kid, so I seem to collect "art" that comes home from kinder (now prep). They're all masterpieces and I'm not allowed to get rid of any of apparently. I'd love a lens hood collection, nice and small and I could keep it quite neat - I also wouldn't feel guilty not using all the cameras!
 
35mm cameras of the 1970's, Pentax and Nikon SLRs mostly.
Recently I've begun collecting audio gear from the same period.

Lately I'm collecting CDs of music from around the time of my birth.
Someday I'd like to own a Leica M2 made in 1961 as well.

One of my secret ambitions seems to be to acquire all the 1970's tech stuff
I dreamed of owning in high school but could never hope to afford then.
Forums classifieds and eBay have put these items within reach now.

I appreciate the beauty of these items but I insist they must work properly too.
Know any good inexpensive repairers? :bang:
