When I first started collecting cameras, the only real criteria was "old and cheap". I've since moved towards getting cameras that I can actually use, but I'm willing to break with that if I find something that is a nice little slice of zeitgeist. I love old quirky cameras are dripping with outdated style. If it was made this side of 1970, it generally won't interest me as a collectable.
Other than that, I've accumulated a fair bit of militaria from both World Wars.
I collect both of the above as historical objects, not as investments. While it would be nice if things increased in value, it's often moot since I can very seldom bring myself to sell anything. I'll nearly always find a reason to talk myself into keeping whatever it is.
