North East England/Scotish borders ahve been very cold this winter, only two days above sub zero, lowest temp -17 so far, a two week spell at beginning of December ave temp -7, so its been very cold, to cold for my battery cameras, so out come the mechanicals, Rollei 35S
I'ts been crazy cold here in NY. I've been shooting though. A lot of interesting things you can find in this big city. Just made a post for January 2011 on my blog if anyone cares to check out some of the photos here.
The temperature around Chicago is single digits, with wind chill much lower. Just wondering what you northerners do all winter for street shooting. Thanks.
About a month ago, temperature dropped to -43°C (-45°F), I was out in the street shooting people.
And my camera wasn't even mechanical. I just got the neverready case, put a handwarmer in it then the MEsuper so the batteries can still work.
Unfortunately, my RF's shutters frese at these temperatures...
Ow, and I also use some great gloves my girlfriend offered me, very thin, very warm, very grippy, a photographer's dream!
+1. The light is the issue. Sucks to leave for work and come from work in the dark. Weekends only time to go out. Also, I typically plan my walks based on coffee shop/Bar locations to warm up along the way. I tried shooting the M8 with gloves and it works out a bit but I miss the feel without gloves. Also, a coat (like a Barbour classic hunting coat) with "hand warmer" style pockets work great... as you are walking stick one hand in there to warm up.
It's gotten a lot warmer this week. Philadelphia will seem much more welcoming this weekend then it did for the past couple of months. The solution used to be visiting friends in Miami.
As with many posters here, the problem is not the cold it's the short days. Dark when I drive to work, dark when I drive home, leaving weekends for occasional shooting. Recent ski trips south to Switzerland with a Rollei 35S have been fruitful though:
