I have been shooting with this camera for a while and never really knew what this clip does on the camera (arrow in the figure). Anyone have any idea?

It's a fold out stand for using the camera in "portrait" format on a flat surface.

Hi,does'nt that support the front of the camera when it's sitting on a shelf in the vertical position? Robin

an innocent question but understanable
it has multiple purposes. a little handle to help open the front bed if need be and also for portrait mode (in addition to the already mentioned) it provides a place to hang a dangling canary so the subject can 'watch the birdie' while you depress the shutter

If I ever had the chance to design one of those it would double as a bottle opener.

Nope. Cameras belong out being used, not on shelves.
At least more seriously, nope, because we store folders folded rather than open... don't we? Otherwise dust gets in all the hard-to-clean bits. (Unless you actually have a proper sealed display case.)

the only thing I've *actually* used it for was to clip the film box top to the camera for a reminder when I shoot something other than my ussual...

Three glass-fronted "lawyer's" book cases. One converted glass-fronted gun cabinet (gun holders removed and shelves installed).
