FrankVersionTwo, don't worry about the loaf of bread. Just stay away from that baked version of the stuff, have the liquid version instead! The Germans actually do call it 'Flussiges Brot', liquid bread!

I'll be flying to Bulgaria from Dortmund tomorrow morning, for a four day trip with students. Not a decent bottle of whiskey in sight there, just some 45% grape-derived stuff they call Raquilla. Guess there's no risks of hangovers in the morning, some of that stuff is nasty tastin'...

Highly disputable: almost certainly a myth put about by the Cognac distillers who were worried in the early 20th century about the inroads absinthe was making into their market. Likewise the hallucinogenic properties of the wormwood in la fée verte: you'd probably be dead of alcohol poisoning before you started getting visions, unless you were highly suggestible or a bit crazy to begin with. That's why it was legalized again, when science was pressed into service to replace political influence.

About 20 years ago I had some good Czech absinthe, and 40 years ago I used to drink Pernod (by origin, de-wormwooded absinthe), but I've yet to find any good Spanish or (modern) French absinthe. Or maybe it's just that my tastes have changed. Absinthe was the favoured drink of young, doomed artists and writers, so maybe if you aren't doomed enough and don't die of it, you just go off it.


I have some Chateau Saint Ferran 89.9 proof. I even have an absinthe spoon.

But as for actually drinking it... Well, maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

Pretty much anything within reach (I limit volume, not breadth), though dirty martinis (beefeater or hendrick's) get preference.
 
Good beer and Leica gear is my flavour on pay day.... It's just a shame that my thirst for both is too great to allow me to sustain a decent standard of living for the rest of the month. So after the evening of the 25th I am thrust from a world of fine ales and Summicrons into a world of nooddles and ketchup.
 
RFFers are a diverse bunch these days. What don't they drink?

Personally, in the last few days - water, coffee, green tea, black tea, IPA, black IPA, zinfandel, gin, rum and scotch. I like most liquids it seems. 😉

Haven't tried absinthe though. I've heard its very licorice which isn't especially appealing. A shame as it sounds interesting. My scotch and whiskey experience isn't as deep as I'd like though as I'm still reasonably cheap when it comes to drinks.

Scotch,,, really cheap, or really expensive. The stuff in the middle is just trying to be something that it's not.

(women the same way,,, line 'em up by cost, throw everything in the middle away and keep whats left) ;-)
 
Lafite is wonderful (my wife and I were engaged over a bottle), but as there was no option for Gevrey Chambertin, I opted for the Islay: my malt of choice.
 
Tea for me: Earl Grey, English breakfast or simple lemon tea - it's all good.
But, as I just finished grading the last of my students' exam papers this afternoon, a celebratory beer or (hic!) three has been had...
 
In Montreal (or Quebec in general), we are not really "educated" to drink wine or fine alcool, but we have a bunch of "hand crafted" beer... My god...

What about a beautiful piece at 9% of alcool brewed with lactose or maple sirup?

Or, a dark strong 10% piece of oat wonder brewed with chocolate, vanilla and love?

I don't walk strait after drinking those, but I guess that I'm happy 😉
