What happened to my "girls in camera shirts thread"...it's gone/deleted/vanished

No offense Bob. But this seems an unwise path on a forum that thrives on the creativity and vision of its photographers. I'm sure we've all come across stuff here that we'd rather not see. But if everyone got to exclude what they didn't like, there wouldn't be much here to look at.

i did not comment in the original thread, nor did i complain about it. all i said was that i found it offensive and i'm glad it's gone.

bob

would you be equally as offended if I posted a thread of male models in camera shirts? would you still post that it "objectifies" the men in the pictures? If not, THAT is the true face of sexism.

if the men looked like they were being objectified(in my opinion,) yes i would be offended.

bob

Nudes aren't an objectification of women and girls in T shirts are?

exactly. in my opinion the pictures were not taken or viewed in a respectful manner, that is why they looked offensive to me.
this is the difference between william eggleston and martin parr...eggleston's pictures never looked to me like he was exploiting anyone, parr's pictures do. eggleston approaches his art with respect and reverence, parr approaches it with aggression.

i just happen to not like aggressive, sexist, or exploitative art. you can look at all the american apparel ads you want, i find them creepy and offensive.

I certainly agree with you on several points here. Particularly regarding Martin Parr. I find a lot of his work to be rather mean spirited.

as a 'Woman' I was NOT offended by the Thread
in ANY thread you can possibly find a sexist, racist, etc bone to pick

Michael once posted another thread which I found to be a tad more intolerant of women..
the Girls in Thailand Bikini Party Pixs
though admittedly it was NOT THE PHOTOS
but more the way people related to them
with some men salivating as well as possibly doing other things :p

I think TOLERANCE & RESPECT is the key...:D
Not to Ban an Entire Thread but those Comments that step beyond the Realm

There was a recent thread here which I cannot find though I'm sure it still exists / Poll & Views on 'Photographing the Homeless'
I posted numerous shots and was pummeled by a Rude Dissenter.
Wish I could find the Thread for exact Quotes....
He argued rather insanely, telling me he wished someone would get me in a dark alley, hurt me, steal my M9, (which i don't even own, mind you I can't afford one nor would I if I could.... a Film Gal all the way)
No one came to my Defense but I was rather shocked that His type of behavior was Ignored.

Cheers & Best to All...Keep Shooting :D

That is unacceptable by any standard. That person should have been banned forever. Physically threatening ones person is very serious. I would have reported that to the Mods. Sorry to hear that happened to you Helen.

There is one post in that thread that sounds exactly like what Helen described... except the physical threat. It said "I hope one of those homeless people finds you in an alley, takes your M9 and uses the money to buy food."

WAY different. If not altogether pleasant, still.

implied threat. not WAY different at all.

You are correct I slightly misquoted... because I could not find the Original Text
Here is the EXACT quote from NICKTROP: "I hope them homeless folks gang up on you, as you wander into depressed urban areas to create your "ART",steal your M9 and use it to buy food and a change of Clothes."

To my Mind, there is a Call to Violence in that Quote.
being Ganged up upon seems rather an Extreme gesture to wish upon someone
all because he did not like the View Point of people depicting the Homeless.

You would have had my support had I read that regardless of gender

i thought the thread was in bad taste, so i'm not surprised it got deleted. i'm guessing underwear had something to do with it.

there is a quote somewhere from HCB where he says that we must approach our subjects with total respect. he is revered as one of the best photographers in history and they'll still be talking about him in 100 years. do you think the winogrands, parrs, etc will even be a blip on the radar then? i don't.

Sure it is. A sarcastic "Maybe someone should take away your fancy camera that you're exploiting them with so they can buy food", implied threat or not, is utterly orthogonal, in meaning and effect, to her characterization of it as "I hope someone beats you up and takes your camera."

I understand where you're coming from as the target of the statement. I disagree with the conclusions, but that's a different thread so I'm going to drop it. :)
