I still visit RFF most days, but haven't been staying as long as I used to. It does seem to have gone a bit flat, lost its spark. Its almost as if we are all walking on egg shells, frightened to be in the least bit controvesrial in case we run foul of the "rules". Its not a bad place, just not as interesting as it was. Its easy to be negative, so in the spirit of improvement I've listed what I think could be done to revitalise RFF - purely my personal opinion and no disrespect meant to any individual.
Do something about the classifieds - I agree with those that think the old version contributed to the community spirit. I don't have a problem with paying a fee if you don't already contribute (or even if you do contribute), but raise the bar to something like $100 and then a flat $5 contribution after that. Also make it an honesty box approach - most people will play the game. You can leave the new classifieds for sponsor stuff and perhaps encourage more of it from our sponsors. It would then become the place we look for dealer deals.
Ease up on the moderation. I liked Joe's approach which was unobtrusive but nonetheless effective. Who cares if threads wander or go a bit OT or are posted in the wrong place - its a bit like saying that you can't discuss this topic in this corner of the bar - this place used to be just like a group of guys meeting at the local bar and those kind of conversations do wander. Also we don't go to a different bar if we start discussing lenses half way through a discussion on photography as art - it just happens like this in the real world. Moderate in moderation and only if things get personal or nasty.
Give us a film forum, then the digi guys will know where to go to start a decent war 😉
Give us a photography forum where we can talk about photography without worrying about RF, TLR, SLR, MF, LF, digital etc. I do like this place and the people and I find it frustrating to have to move somewhere else to discuss non RF, but equally valid photographic, issues.
Give us a "Mine's better, bigger, more expensive, cuter, more exclusive than yours" forum where we can slag each others gear off in a civilised way🙂
Get rid of the stars - I don't need them to prove I'm better than everyone else😀
Get rid of the ignore function - I think we should all learn to confront our demons😉
Make Joe Friday and Dsang post more - they're usually quite funny and bring most threads down to a level where we can all participate
Ban drinking whilst posting - it may ruin your keyboard.
As frivolity is now taking over from seriousness I'll stop. The first seven suggestions still stand though.
