What have you just BOUGHT?

Well I didn’t really “buy” it, I built it! This is a fully working replica of the very first 35mm still Camera ever made. Built in 1905 in Nellerod Denmark by Jens Poal Andersen. This makes a 24x60mm negative!

Not bought but given - a Rolleiflex Automat K4/50 that I’ve dated to 1950 (serial number 115xxx) - from a friend on Friday who was clearing out his father’s house and was going to dump the camera as he thought it was “obsolete junk”.

I know… 😡

Offered to me as an afterthought - he’s not into photography - as he thought I might like to “mess about with it”.

Seems to work okay, is buttery smooth, has clean lenses and an unmarked screen, however, the self-timer is very sticky but works after a fashion: probably could do with a clean. I’m going to put a film through it asap.

Is B&W film this expensive these days? I am surprised.

Not really, depends on what you buy.

Arista EDU 400 (excellent film) is $4.89/36 exp or about $52 if you buy 100ft and bulk load.
Ultrafine Extrme 400 is $3.60/36 exp $40/100 ft. There is a thread on this film and Dourblaster has posted lovely results.
You can then save money by developing it yourself - super easy. I use DF96 Monobath which is a one stop liquid for everything and it can be reused 18 times (according to my testing). It works out to just over $1 to develop.

If you take inflation into consideration, film is cheap.

Huss "Not really. It depends on what you buy."

IMO It depends on how you work. Back when I proudly got my first motordrive, I was surprised how many discards I had. After years of mostly large & medium format work, I realize I work the same way with 35mm.... I'm far more selective. Also, the farther I am from home, the less i'm willing to use films with known QC problems. If I'm travelling i only use FP4+, & Tri-X or Tmax 400. Now that I think of it, the price of FB printing paper affects the way I work much more than the rise in film prices.
