You’d be wearing a hoodie and pushing a shopping cart down the street. But instead of a bedroll, you’d have tripods strapped to your back, the cart would be full of K1000s, Sure Shots, Polaroid Swingers, PC connectiors, and lens caps. Your cardboard sign would read “Will Work For Film”.

A Nikon FG kit, with a 36-72 Series E zoom, its 75-150 companion and, for low light purposes, a 50 1.8 E series standard lens. All very good (36-72) to like new (FG) to unused in box (75-150) for a smidge over $300. Also bought a new "hippie" strap off of Amazon, similar to the straps I had back in the day. If I can find my old punk rock button collection, I'll pin them on.

The FG was my first real camera; took it on my first international trip and used it quite a bit, then swapped it for an FM-2 and shot that for the next 15 or so years.

It's funny that the new Nikon Zfc is compared to the FM-2, when it's really the digital version of the FG. They are almost exactly the same size and weight and the FG has both a Program and Automatic setting, very unlike the FM-2.

I had forgotten how loud the shutter sound is on these things; compared to the Leica "snick," the FG sounds like a robot mating with a stapler.
 
The FG is quite a little charmer! Beautiful finder. Quite durable for a consumer grade camera, too. I had one with the 45 pancake lens that was my go-everywhere camera. You won't regret your purchase!

The FG is a competent, fun, good-looking camera. The optional grip makes it even better.

Mine also has the 50/1.8 E lens - a perfect compact lens for this camera.

As for the loud shutter, does yours still have the mirror foam intact? That makes a difference.
 
The FG is a great little camera! Though I was a Pentax guy, I bought a new FG as a gift to my parents, along with a 35-80 Tamron zoom. After a decade or two hanging in their often-damp front coat closet, both lens and body were effectively destroyed by the salt air, as their house was on Puget Sound.
 
Yep, first thing I did was put in a new foam kit. I need to take out the focusing screen and clean it, but everything is working fine. Shutter is still clacky, though.

I once bought an FG off of the Goodwill site just for the lens. Off the top of my head I forget which lens it was now. I sold it on to a student looking for her first camera. I have Mom's old EM which is the electronic equivalent of the FG, I believe. Either of those cameras paired with a Series E 50 is a nice light weight kit.

My entire "herd" of Nikon manual or mechanical shutter cameras sound like lighting claps. N80 is whisper quiet and very smooth. No vibrations that conduction through your hands to your neck.
 
To me, my Nikon F’s and F2’s sound best - a wonderful sound - but I notice the sound changes depending on the lens attached. That seems a bit odd.

The sounds of various cameras is probably worthy of a separate thread. I know there was a YouTube video someone posted, but it was a bit disappointing.

It would be tedious, but I could probably post a sound file of dozens of different cameras. To me the shutter sound can be part of a camera’s appeal. I bought an Olympus Pen FT half-frame mostly because I loved the shutter sound. I’m glad I did because it is an extremely enjoyable camera to make photos with.
 
Just scored a near-mint Steinheil Culminar 85mm f/2.8 in LTM for a price I dare not say here, because it was stupid low, considering what asking for these lenses has been lately.

IMO none of the mechanical cameras I currently own are objectionably loud.
OTOH the shutter sound of the Nikon FM2n I once owned was quite loud.

The N80 is fine while it works but when it breaks it should probably be considered disposable.
As parts and repairs for them became more unavailable I sold most of my electronic cameras years ago.

Chris, have you ever heard a (mechanical) Kowa Super 66 go off? Cows stop giving milk, chickens refuse to lay, and children run for the safety of their mothers' arms.
Great camera, nonetheless. I think I love it in part because it's so despised.
 
I bought a Hoya 22.5mm screw-on UV filter, for my Petri Compact. Cost me £5.00 froma shop in Manchester. There had been a B+W 22.5mm kr1.5 on ebay for £19, with £15.00 postage from Germany which I'd been "watching", so that saved me £30. Yay!

I just "need" an nd2 and Green in 22.5mm now.
 
The Bronica S2 shutter sound evokes the same kind of response.

Other extreme is the Bronica RF645. Someone in one of these threads had a good description of its shutter release sound - like an asthmatic mouse.
