Just to clarify, the laughably mendacious piece in Slate was not referencing farms, it was advancing ludicrous falsehoods about e.coli in the watersheds here and the influence of the big money from big ranchers in Wyoming on the State government. LOL. In my comments I was specifically addressing that.
The situation of cattle ranchers, presently at least, is not analogous to that of farming in this country, which has migrated to the corporate model, for better or for worse. One would have to completely agree with you about the demise of family farming in this country. There are farm subsidies for farmers, and insane dislocations to farming like the ethanol subsidy. That has had a lot to do with the demise of the family farm, and the rise of agribusiness, which is better equipped to game the federal system.
None of that pertains to cattle ranching, which, at least in Wyoming, has remained a family enterprise. This was the what was falsely characterized in the Slate piece, which, btw, is what used to be known as yellow journalism, not investigative journalism. But, I live here, one mile off the Snake River, as it happens, so how could I be as aware of local water conditions as a fantasist lawyer in Denver with an agenda?
I wish I was a better landscape photographer, ironic given where I live, but those who are should come out and look for yourselves. Talk to people who actually live here. I don't have time to go into the whole ins and outs of the facts about water quality in Wyoming. Suffice it to say, facts were not allowed in the Slate piece. Like most states in the Mountain West, and Wyoming is undoubtedly cleaner than Colorado, the danger, minor such as it is, is from giardia, not e.coli. And the giardia comes from wildlife like the mountain goats, and antelope, not cattle. And our wildlife is our best feature, so we deal with it.
This addendum submitted for those who are interested in truth, which, apparent from comments, is not quite 100%.

Oh please. Larry, the whole point is that in this country we _don't need_ "the Stasi. Why not? Well, because up to very recent times, we had actual investigative journalists, ordinary citizens actually, who could document and report on violations.
And sorry, but small, private ranchers do not get a pass. Pollution is pollution, and if you want to keep the pristine wilderness that you all rave about being so beautiful in Wyoming and elsewhere in our country, then you will STOP taking away people's ability to QUESTION and INVESTIGATE what they see.

Nobody is getting a pass, have you even been listening? Does nobody read any more, or is it all Buttbook, blog posts and Twitter? People should broaden their horizons, and that doesn't mean adding Salon and Huffpo to Slate..
I was on the Board of the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation for years, and a member of the Conservation Alliance here. I live here. When I saw this absurd article referenced here on RFF, about a law which addresses trespassing, not photography or the environment, which contains false statements about e.coli in the watershed, I thought people might want to be better informed. My bad. Apparently, that's the last thing some people want.
Have it your way. I confess, I made it all up. It's horrible here. All the photos of clear Wyoming rivers lakes and streams you see in travel magazines--every one of those was taken in Alaska. It is horrible here! Stay away! The rivers! Every one of them has cows in them, live ones pooping, dead ones rotting! Every stream is worse than the Ganges, but without the prayer flags! Cows, cows, cows! Worse, than cows, Republican cows! I'd move, but my car is covered in cadmium and plutonium from the Big Corporate Nazi open pit mines that cover the entire state, and even Sean Penn won't come in here to save us.
It is awful! Really, stay away! Save Yourselves!

In other news, the senate had a vote today whether to bundle the fast track sellout trade promotion permanent corporate fascism authority resident Obama wants with 3 other bills, mainly some handwaving currency manipulation thing (China vs schumer/wall st.), and failed to move it forward.
Desultory good news, but it's probably just the punk Wyden et al trying to make a fake little stand before caving and running out of town, like democrats usually do. They mainly want the headline that there seems to be some kind of principle somewhere that was stood up for, yay. After they get that they can move on to selling us out, which then becomes something nobody mentions in polite company. We'll see how it goes, but I guess Hillary's still doing some listening, lmfao.

I did actually consider the various options regarding where to place the thread. Pertaining to alleged limitations on the practice of photography, and not relating to any particular type nor make of camera the General subforum seemed most apt. I note that another thread about London's metro police is in the general subforum but also that one about laws Texas proposed to limit photography was moved to the "Business of Photography" subforum. If I started it in the location not most appropriate, my apologies.
Perhaps I should clarify that it was never my intention to ruffle feathers by posting the link. But there have been a number of discussions recently about various jurisdictions interfering with the ability of people to make images. I posted the link because: (A) I thought the many US members of RFF might wish to be aware of its content, and; (B) as Tasmania is a very long way from Wyoming, I have no knowledge of any background behind the issues involved and was genuinely interested in learning more. Note the past tense.

Trespass has always been against the law. However the law, in part, reads " 'Open land' means land outside the exterior boundaries of any incorporated city, town,subdivision"
That is a pretty broad definition. If we apply the "letter of the law," the national forests and BLM land would be open land. And for those who do not know it, a lot of that land is open to grazing by permit. So you could be in violation of trespass and illegal data gathering on public land.
However I think this law will get thrown out as if violates the First Amendment and the Clean Water Act and therefor is illegal under the Supremacy Clause.
"This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the constitution or laws of any state to the contrary notwithstanding."
This is grandstanding by those who claim our freedom is being trampled on, but step on other people's freedom.
