What is the best strap?

I've read a bunch about the strap lugs wearing out on the ZI, and since the used ZI I just bought seems to already be showing some wear in that area, I'd like to see if I can avoid wearing them down any more. I've seen recommendations for good straps in other threads, but I can't remember which ones, and my forum search didn't really help all that much. I thought it would be a good idea to just have a thread dedicated to it for future reference.

So, you veteran ZI shooters out there, what do you say?
 
Thanks for the thoughtful replies. I think I'll try the brass rings first. I'd like to go without a case if I can. The camera came with the Zeiss grip, which I quite like, and would rather not sacrifice. I've also debated getting some parachute cord and seeing how good my knot tying skills are, but that may be too adventurous.
 
"Back in the day" it was common to see loops of leather (think: boot lace) used instead of split rings to attach your shoulder strap.

Side benefit: A loop that finished at 3" or so would put the strap ends below the bottom of the camera, and allow a good, unobstructed grip on the body while shooting.

FWIW: You can try it yourself really cheaply.

I have been using my ZM's with the stock strap for 3+ years - and with heavier lenses too (75/90/Nokton 50f1.1 etc) and I haven't seen any significant wear on the lugs yet.

Vaguely remembered from my days as a field engineer: For one metal not to wear (significantly) another, it should be three Rockwell points softer than the one we are trying not to wear.

So: using a ring made of brass sounds on the right track. I can't remember seeing a brass split ring, though. If they exist, it should be useful to Epson owners as well. We see occasional complaints of lug wear on those, as well.

I guess #14 or #12 copper wire could be used to fashion a connection. We would not want the material to be too soft, though. Such a device would have to be inspected daily for signs of wear--unless your camera bounces.

If they made a connector from some space-age material like ABS plastic or carbon fiber, would you trust it?

Anyway, my favourite strap of the moment is the strap that came with a domke 903 with all the metal hardware removed and regular split rings installed. Perfect length/width and has the rubber grip sewn in 🙂

Voigt's ones are great, they're pretty much A&A with Voigt's tag
I'm talking about those you have to pay separate, not the nylon ones that comes with Bessa.

Pros (IMHO)
Good length, soft, strong, very protective, high quality split rings, reasonable priced

Cons (IMHO)
not made for cross shoulder wearing
not widely available
logo is too shinny
I want the Olive color so badly
 
Since i never used the neck strap, on any of my cameras. I decided to order a Gordy wrist strap for the ZI. And it's working perfectly (for me).
