A recent trip has made several things clear to me about what I like and dislike about rangefinders. What I like:
- Small size of camera and especially lenses
- No mirror slap
- Quiet shutter ( relatively-speaking - I use a Bessa R4 )
- Ease of use ( for me, anyway )
What I dislike:
- Frame lines
- No use of zoom lenses ( I know, I know, but I still like them... )
- The need for additional viewfinders ( if I want to use anything longer than a 50 on my Bessa, I need one, but it probably wouldn't work out too well regardless due to the base length? )
I still like my Bessa ( and rangefinders in general, but I'm pretty clear now about my comfort level with them ( after using them for a few years now ).
Other revelations:
I've discovered that I absolutely love my Rolleiflex ( known that for at least a year now ), and tlr's in general. I love the larger negative, the waist-level finder, and the ability to raise the camera to eye-level if I want to. I find myself shooting much more 120 film than 35mm.
I want a zoom lens. Yes, heretical though it may be. I miss using a zoom. I have my original slr ( a Canon AE1-P ) with a couple of zooms, but I'd like something a bit smaller and rugged, so I'm currently looking for a Nikon FM2n ( and hey - I've always wanted a Nikon ).
I want a small point and shoot. Why? So that when I go out walking somewhere ( usually in the evening, but could be anytime ) and I don't want to carry anything heavy, it'd be nice to have a little p&s ( but a good one with a zoom - topic for a thread in another forum ).
And lastly: I not only love film, I don't like, nor do I want to use, digital. Please don't take this as digital-bashing, because it's not. I've simply come to the realization that I don't like to shoot with digital, plain and simple. Some ( many actually ) love it, but I do not. It does nothing for me.
So, now that I am content with the role that rangefinders have in my photographic endeavors, I will continue to shoot with ( and enjoy ) them, and currently look for an slr ( for that zoom lens ), eventually get a small p&s, and continue to enjoy my Rolleiflex ( and start playing with my recently-acquired Diacord ).
That's where I am now, photographically-speaking, anyhow.

P.S. Sorry about the length of the first post - I didn't realize how much I had rambled on!

6x6 is great if you develop your films, which means if you like trannys your out of luck.

Why do you say that? You can develop E-6 at home.
