But, yes, to me its the only good and logical choice - a good fast 50mm lens.

The CV offers are "good:, yes, but not excellent. Maybe with the exception of the 35/1.2. Performance and build wise, the ZMs are up there with Leica at much more affordable price points (except those manufactured in Germany). There is definitely a market for more ZMs. 🙂

I wonder if Zeiss will begin using more aspheric surfaces in its Cosina-made ZMs. AFAIK only the 15/2.8 (made in Germany) of the current lineup uses them. The CV 35/1.2 for example has 10 elements with three aspheric surfaces - to make the same lens without aspherics might take something like 13 elements or more, adding bulk and weight to an already hefty lens.

I wouldn't mind seeing APO glass in a 85/2.8 either.

I'd pre-buy one if it were competitively priced like all of the other ZMs have been.
 
Hmm, everyone wants bigger and faster, but I'd like something really compact but ergonomic, kind of an extension of the Zeiss "C" optics. I'd love to have a 28 or 35 that was as small and tactile as the pre-asph Summicron-35 and with the character and quality of modern Zeiss glass. I'm not bothered if they're limited to f/2.8.

I guess that it's a similar idea to the new Leica lenses, but not being Leitz glass, I could actually afford them!

There is the need to substitute the 28 Rokkor, which has the famous white spots with something similar in size. Leica' ASPH 28 is a jewel but is too expensive

I'd buy a Planar 35-50mm f/2 ZM if it is not much bigger/heavier than the Tri-elmar. Perhaps it's impossible to make (or to sell), but hell would I know...
 
I want a fast 50mm that isn't as expensive as a Leica but has great optics. I love my 35mm ZM but its not fast enough for the kind of shooting I do.

I 'd like to see what Zeiss can do for a 35 f/1.4 and 28 f/2. If the cooperation with CV rules these out, then, in my fantasies, a 25 f/2 would be something that 'd interest me, if it wasn't huge, ultraexpensive and massively underperforming compared to its stellar sibling 😀 .

In the real world, I think Zeiss will go for a 50 f/1.2 lens, and a wild guess is they may try a 105 f/2.5. Both not so difficult for them to make, and harking back into lens designs for rangefinders that are no longer with us.
 
The reason I excluded longer focal length lens (135mm + 180mm) was due to possible focussing problems with these lens. A f1.4 85mm would be depressingly expensive (look at the f2 price for starters) and may also have focussing difficulties at close distances. I could have includes a f2 25mm or f2 21mm - 'that would be nice'. However, the VC range seem to be for the fast lens (f1.2mm 35mm) and the ZM the higher performace optically. Also I felt that Zeiss would feel that a f2 21mm would need to be made in Germany etc. with a £2k+ price tag. The same I feel for the f1.4 28mm.

The f1.2 50mm was suggested and not a f1 50mm because - again focusing diifficuties (people are moaning about the slight focus shift wit the f1.5) and also the size, weight and reduced performace (overall) producing an f1 lens. I thought a f1.2 as it is just over a stop faster than the current f1.5, would be big but not f1 massive, would have a fair perforamce advantage at all aperatures over the leica 50mm f1.
So in summary, I picked lens which Zeiss could make in Japan and would (hopefully) produce the quality performance they have shown in the current line-up.

Also, you weren't refferring to the Zeiss 'Super-Q Gigantar' lens were you😱

I'd forgotten the Super-Q Gigantar -- thanks for the reminder!

Point well taken about f/1 or faster, but the thing is, there are so many excellent lenses around at all speeds that you almost have to appeal to the small-willy brigade who are looking for ultimates!

It think I know were you are comming from, a flagship lens to say ' this is what we are capable of' - which others can only aspire too. Hummm OK, as long as they will also do the lesser lens (e.g f1.4 35mm) as well. Also you have me beat - its not a tri or quad focal length lens (21-25-28-35 f4😕, nor a f2 21mm😕 , nor a f1 50mm😕 , and the super-Q Gigantar is out🙄
So far the poll looks good for the 35mm and 50mm and pretty good for the 28mm.

Back in the real world - I used my 'new' second hand ZM f2 35mm for the first time today, and did not shoot wider than f2.8😱 hey ho.
 
25 f3.5 or f4 for me.....

28 f2 would be interesting however, super sharp and well built teeny lenses would be good:

collapsible 90mm f4 like the macro elmar or a collapsible 75 f2.8 that is weeny?
Tiny 35/50 2.5 like the Summarit would be cool...

Small, super sharp lenses which do not need to be super fast would be my main interest. Dynamite build and IQ on some simple lenses would be welcome so overall:

25 f4 - tiny
35 f 2.5 - tiny
50 f 2.5 - tiny
75 f 2.5/2.8 (collapsible ideally)
90 f4 (collapsible)

In real terms I am happy with what I have, however, I am tempted by a tiny kit consisting of:

25mm (I would want ZM quality in CV sized package),
35mm (summarit sized),
75mm (smaller than the Summarit if possible, so like the Macro-elmar).
