What on earth is the matter with this Forum?

Recently I have been having log-in associated problems both on this machine (I am at work and using IE) and at home (where I am using Firefox) Both machines are running XP and I have changed none of my internet security settings but in recent weeks I keep getting logged out every few minutes. Today took the cake!

I logged in this morning and then a few minutes later, I found a thread I wanted to post to. I went to reply and was told I was not logged in. I re logged in. I wrote my response (maybe took me 10 minutes) and clicked to submit new thread - only to be told, guess what? - That I am not logged in. I logged in again. A few minutes later I realised I needed to make a small edit - clicked the edit button on the page and was told - you guessed it. Logged in again. I made my edit and again was told I was not logged in and was not authorised to make that change.

I realise it may be something to do with cookies which are probably switched off at work but not so far as I know at home - and as I said in any event I have not changed my settings at home anyway - so something has changed with this damn site. Is your authentication server functioning properly as it seems to be losing track of its sessions?

Also the site is slow as a wet week. To load this page (a page with nothing in it but a form) to post this thread took about 30 seconds - and I am on high speed broadband both here and at home. This repsonse is typical.

So whats up?

Stranegly after having the described problem for the past half an hour or more (and quite often at home too) the above post worked first time!!!!!! So its intermittent.

Me Too!

Me Too!

I suggest you delete your cookies and clear your cache, but not disable cookies

Well, I could, but no other site gives me this same problem. I've been experiencing it for weeks now - so much so that, anticipating I will be logged off by the time I've composed a reply, I go Edit/Copy, submit the post, get the "not logged in" message, log in again and repost by using the copy to paste into the window. Pain in the A** and appears to be a time-out problem with the server, not my computer.

For ages I never had to delete any cache or cookies, all the way through Firefox 3.0. Now I am experiencing non-persistence of my logins, but NOT with Safari on my iTouch. That sounds like a browser problem, yet still could be a server problem.

This really does sound like a server problem to me.
1) I already delete my cookies at home fairly frequently as a part of my routine system clean out.
2) I have made no changes to my system or security settings
3) at least one other person has exactly the same problem.

BTW between posting the first and second message in this thread and posting this one, the system has logged me out once more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

You haven't annoyed Joe lately have you?

I've heard he tends to do this to people to mess with their heads when they repeatedly pi$$ him off!

I have this problem running Safari on a Mac. I found if I checked "remember me" it keeps me logged in.

That is sort of the point of that little feature. If you don't click the "remember me" box, every time you open up RFF in a new window you'll have to log in.

I dont know about you guys, but every once in a while I try and visit the site and it says I've been banned and to contact an admin. I follow the link to contact an admin and it gives me a 404 error. I've done nothing wrong, at least I dont think. Then a few days later I'm unbanned.

this is the first that i'm hearing about this from members.
i'm using safari on my macbook and things have been fine.
i notice that stephen is reading this thread so i assume he will contact jorge for a look see.

i had problems with being logged out until started checking the "Remember Me?" check box each time i log in. no problems since.

Well, I'll try that and see if it works but in the past I never had too. I guess some things change though.

When you check a "remember me" option on most web sites / forum pages this means that when you come back again to log in tommorrow or the next day or whenever, the site has saved your details to facilitate logging in again next time - ie so you do not have to retype your user ID and password again. I have NEVER seen a site which treats every page as a new session that requires re logging in.

Whats more this is supposed, by normal web conventions to be persistent - the site should not forget that you have told it to remember me each time I visit. This is obviously not appropriate and is contrary to what I would regard as good web design. So I think something is wrong at the server end - And whatever the situation is, someone certainly should not have to log in 5-6 times in the course of posting one single reply to a thread. Thats just plain silly!
Sorry that sounds a bit harping I know - but it should not be a matter as some posters seem to be suggesting - that all will be well if only I remember to click the "remmeber me" box every time I visit.

So whats up?

If there were anything wrong with the forum, many people would be reporting problems. That's not happening.

Whatever is causing your particular log on problems is not the server and is most likely probably between your computer -- including browser, cache, cookies, internet security, and your IP.
