What shall I do with my Leicaflex?

On those increasingly rare occasions when I choose to go out and about with a film camera I tend to take my trusty M6. This leaves the SL MOT sitting on a shelf with all its battery packs, motor, 21mm, 65mm macro and 560 Telyt. The last two were the reason I bought this camera some years ago...they do things rangefinders can't...well...they do now since I have sold all my Visoflex stuff.

So what to do? It is my one and only SLR. It has a wonderful viewfinder. It works well. It is built like a tank. To get rid would be to dispose of a rare though not valuable camera that would be hard to replace...will I ever want one again? Will I ever want to use it more? Can I live without a 560mm lens?!

Probably...just not quite sure...but I am at that stage in life when clutter needs to go.

But who would call a Leica clutter?

I agree! Don't sell it, just give it to me. 😛

Actually, only you know. I have a lot of clutter, er... cameras to get rid of, but my Kiev kit, my 167mt kit, my Fujica kit, and my Super Press 23 kit will not go. Not to mention the odd 4x5, 8x10, and 9x12, and FL 35mm ...

But I don't think you should get rid of it if there is a remote chance you will use it. Will it lose any value by your keeping it for a couple of years? Keep it and if you haven't use it in 2 or 3 years, you can revisit the idea.

What happens when the M6 needs a CLA - or, heaven forbid, you drop it?
Always have one spare something to fall back on.
If you have the space and don't need the money, keep it.

560mm is good for shooting boats, birds, planes and classic racing cars. The 'follow focus' helps but I admit I am proud when I get a moving object tack sharp, particularly something coming towards me.

It can also be a lot of fun with landscapes or views, that level of foreshortening, on a clear day, can make nornal rolling countryside rather dramatic...and...if you want a cheesy sunset picture with a huge sun...!

It is 100% the wrong lens to take to an airport or anywhere near a security guard...and the shoulder stock makes it a lot worse.

Wides may well be popular and rightly so but this thing is a lot of fun.

that is one more a mojo specialty lens. sell the three lenses and and get a 50/2 R summicron. you would be left with a fine slr backup for your RFs, and very little clutter ...

I have to agree a good telephoto lens is needed. Mine happens to be a 300/4.5 but with my 2X it becomes a bit more with ease.

What about replacing the SL-MOT with a digital R body?

I was banging my head up against the wall a while back about cutting back and have landed with a GRD III. While years back I never was a 28mm fan, the built in lenses in the GRD family (and the Nikkor 28/2.8 AIs for my FTn) have made me one. So tripping down the P&S digital path I was wondering what to do for digital and telephoto. I came to the point where I was going to get a referb or used Nikon D40x/60 and plunk my long Nikon glass on it for when I needed it.

I have cut back a lot. One rangefinder to match my FTn for film work. My digital needs for wide, normal and macro are handled by a GRD III and GX 100 pair. Telephoto (read give me a 180 or 300 and a 2x) I still have not needed to go down that road. Though a good D300 would work very well it and the 700 is way out of my price range, so is the D60

Perhaps you sell the SLR stuff and fund an M9? New rabbit hole to jump down.

By all means USE it!😱 I use my M3 and my R4 on every on-location project I do now.

It is a travesty to not use a Leica! If you don't want to, send it to me and I will put it through a training exercise for you to keep it feeling wanted.😛

BTW, what did you ever use a 560mm lens for?
