I originally got a pair of brown "paratrooper" style boots from Dr. Marten (can't remember the exact model name). They were absolute sh*t! The main sole was stitched to the boot sure, but the heel was glued on! After about 3 weeks it started to come apart.
Quite some time ago I had a pair of those:

If I recall correctly, mine were not that high. The sole is screwed on. A bit clumsy, but also quite comfortable.

If you are not that tall, these may also be an interesting option:

Obviously you haven't had your foot crushed by a 900 lb.+ motorcycle. Try earning a living with a camera on your feet and all of a sudden shoes become as important as any other piece of gear.

Getting a lot of thoughts on boots. How about a pair of slip-ons that will work on hot pavement (mid-90F weather here yields very hot asphalt), give support, and look professional? Merrell shoes?
Look up "LOX boots" or "Station shoes."
In the Navy the folks who work on liquid oxygen systems have some super snazzy steel toed slip-on boots that give great support, polish up really well and hold up to abuse. They can take a 220 degree flight deck for 10 hours in the Arabian Gulf easy.

Like what? Prefer yet another bag thread? How about a discussion on Leica lens comparisons? Or bokeh? Or camera straps? Or gloves for winter shooting?
How about re-gurgitating every thread that has gone before? Yeah, RFF has come to this.
Now, ladies, post those Choo Choo's, preferably worn by the photographer!

I'm really surprised at all the rugged boot entries.

I normally wear either Clarks Un.Bridge sport sandals or a pair of Vibram FiveFingers when I'm not at work and the weather allows. I also like Merrell jungle mocs and plain old sneakers.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and it is nice to see a thread about something different!

Easy Dave, Bob just made me chuckle, that's all. No issue with the thread, or any thread people want to talk about for that matter.
What you wear, shoes or otherwise, would seem to be pretty dependent on what you're out to shoot. Doing street... comfortable all-day running shoes might be in order like my Asics GT-2150's (in Black). Out at the dusty track for a race, might have to wear some hiking style stuff like my Merrill's. Taking some fashion pics with some absurdly hot models, some Mark Nason's might fit the bill.
Walk on friends, walk on.

Remember, if you can't walk to get the photo, no zoom in the world will get it for you.

dave, i run merrells or columbias from academy sports. academy carries lots of different models in several brands in the hiking and walking displays, so you can find something will be immediately right for you, if you wear a semi-normal size. a nice pair of chinos, a polo shirt and a sound pair of such shoes are plenty dignified for small-town council meets. new balance makes some models with leather top that look kind of like brogans. i have very narrow heels and have not been able to find well-fitting new balance shoes for my own skinny fit. YMMV ...

oh yeah, the key ingredient for cool, non-smelly feet: smart wool light- or medium-weight crew top hiker socks. they are made mostly of the softest merino wool, with some artificial yarn to hold shape. they are worth every dime they cost.

Ah those are different. I got these: http://www.dmusastore.com/p-2944-pier.aspx I would suggest shying away from any Doc with multi-piece soles. At least any held on with glue! I do like the paratrooper look though.

Wow...thanks to each and everyone for posting in this thread. I have learned a lot!
So, Merrell it is. Just found a pair of World Legend shoes at Dillard and online. Tried on a pair at Dillard and immediately liked this better than the mocs.

I walked 11 days through NY on slip-on low sneakers, and I did a LOT of walking. My feet ended up hurting (though no blisters to my surprise) towards the end of the trip, so I tried some other shoes.. big mistake, my feet have never hurt so much, I could barely walk. Next day I went back to the sneakers and wore those without further problems until the end of the trip. I think I walked about 10 km a day, probably more on some days.
Next time I'll probably get a pair of Nike's or something. It's just that they were all so ugly that I couldn't convince myself to buy a pair haha.
