what would you do?

Hi,

I need advice on what to do with my RD-1.

I've purchased the camera on a visit to Japan in early August 2004, in the Bic Camera shop in Tachikawa (1h west of Tokyo, it was sold out in Tokyo...)

- I've taken approx. 8k photos since.
- I've adjusted the vertical alignment of the rangefinder twice.

So far, so good.

But: the rangefinder brightllines are not level, and this is still causing me nightmares, sometimes :bang:

As I live in Switzerland, the only way of having this fixed under warranty is sending the camera to Japan, as I bought the camera with a Japanese warranty.

Would you do that?
I mean, there are some risks in doing so, if the camera is not repaired, but replaced, maybe there will be new problems with the replacement camera? 😕

I have to confess that I very much love Japan, so I'm very much tempted to visit Japan again, before the end of the warranty period (and get the new Zeiss glass 😉 )...

So what would you do?
Send the camera to Japan and hope?
Can Dan Goldberg (DAG) align the brightlines?

Contact the store first. Don't send them the camera out of the blue. At the store they may recommend what to do. And, if you ship the camera to them, make sure to pack it well...

If the camera is still under warranty, it's their responsibility to get it fixed.

One last suggestion: find out if the credit card you paid the camera with has something like a "purchase protection program" and invoke it in case the camera store objects to something.

If you want some help with regards the Japanese side let me know send me a PM or a e-mail.
BIC Camera is very good with returns but Epson themselves are very receptive. I have a friend that misplaced his recipts and guarantee card but they still accepted it. I guess thet with the numerous problems they are making a special effort.

You might still want to try Epson in Switzerland! With a 3000 euro camera they can show a bit of goodwill.

- Contacting the store will be problematic, because I don't speak Japanese. I tried to find an e-mail address of the store, but had no success so far.

- Epson Switzerland is the wrong address, they don't like the fact that people buy things abroad (for less) and later ask them for a repair. Furthermore, Epson is still very much a computer company, and when I asked Epson Switzerland for a replacement battery last September, they a) didn't know that they were going to sell a camera and b) asked me "why does a webcam need a battery, I mean, aren't these powered via USB?" 😀

LOL! I can just imagine them saying that to you.

Here's another solution... you sell the cam to me at a decent price and your problems will now be mine. That way you can also free up your dough for the upcoming digital M or Zeiss digital. 😉
