What's this gunk on shutter curtain?

The shutter seems to be firing properly and is light tight, but obviously it didn't originally look like this!

Old rubber layer is getting older. Do you take pictures with fast lens, by any chance?
 
Leica brand shutter curtain gunk. Current retail, $650 (to replace shutter curtains) Or are am I underestimating?
 
Should I worry? I'm leaning towards keep shooting till it dies :p I haven't technically paid for the camera yet though so I'm trying to get all the information I can.
 
CLA + curtain change by Youxin is $420.

Unless you're buying that camera for $300, I'd find another.

If you get it at that price, the total cost including a curtain replacement would still be below market for BP M4s.

Buy it then send it out for curtain replacement :)

For one curtain. I just had that done on one of my M4s that I bought from Japan a few months ago in "mint with fresh CLA" condition for almost a grand :bang: Youxin said the camera hasn't had a CLA for three decades. :(

Well I'm getting a decent deal for it (no not $700! I wish!) and it's from the store I work at, so if I do run into a real issue in the nearish future, I'm sure we can work something out. It's not as-is like eBay.
 
Is the gunk sticky? If not, I'd think you could live with it at the right price. Of course, it will eventually need to be replaced. The first curtain on an old Canon I have looked similar, but it was a sticky goo. Had to replace it.
 
I don't get buying a camera with a shutter like that just because it's black. The rubber has been scraped off of part of the shutter, and deposited in chunks on the other part.
 
Its funny how nice the camera looks on the outside with a shutter like that, never seen that before looks like its been somewhere damp. I would still buy it if its a good price and you could always in the future pick up a user m4p and transfer all the black parts as cheap maybe as getting a new shutter.
Whats the shutter like on the other side? I didn't really think they had a rubber coating maybe its just oil or grease from a bad repair?
You could always try a little lighter fluid on a cotton bud to see if it cleans up.
 
A shutter curtain like this in an M-Leica of fifty years old is normal. You simply need a replacement of the curtains.

Is this the shutter of that beautiful black M4? I would not hesitate to have the curtains replaced by one of the well known repairers, DAG for instance. This camera deserves the best service available.

Thanks everyone. Yep this is the curtain from the black M4. The other curtain looks completely normal.

It's not sticky that I can tell. I know exactly what you mean about the canon sticky goo, this isn't like that.
 
If it's not sticky and it doesn't leak light, just use it.
