I saw this thread - and voted - when it was first posted, but did not comment, thinking I had nothing of interest to add. Now finding the thread enjoying a rebirth I find I may be something of an anomaly: a NYer born in NYC, whose parents and all four g'parents were also born in NYC. Almost all my G'Grandparents were also [one g'grandmother arrived from County Kilkenny at age 11]; and some of my GGGrandparents were born right in Manhattan too. I myself have never lived more than one county away from NYC - though I have thoroughly enjoyed every time I have spent elsewhere - tho' temporarily!

Records show that I was born in the United Kingdom. Newspapers tell me, two months and one day down the line, this is still so but evidence suggests that I, among most others, are originally from Africa.

About 75,000 years ago, my ancestors came out of East Africa, and eventually migrated up through the Middle East and into Eastern Europe. Much, much later, in the early part of the 20th century they crossed the Atlantic Ocean to settle in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where I was born, raised, went to school, work, married, had children and still live to this day.
Unfortunately, much of this was not well documented at the time, and those records that are available on Ancestor.com are only about 100 years old, so you'll just have to take my word for this.

Historically, people around here were either dike-building farmers or pirates. Nowadays, we're making cars and windmills and we're still pirates (the business is called tourism today).
According to statisticians, we're also among the happiest people in Germany. We are considered headstrong, stubborn and freedom-loving by other German tribes. And we're big tea drinkers.
