Where can I get a coated Summar?

I have a couple of uncoated Summars. The nicer of the two, a 1938 chrome model, is the closest to new of any of my 1930's lenses. Beautifully clean glass, which is not easy to find… but not impossible. Find a relatively clean example, use a hood, and don't have unrealistic expectations of what it is… and enjoy. Low-contrast lenses have their applications.
Even my '35 nickel one, which is not nearly as clean as the other, is fine until I point it a bit too much towards the sun…

Hi,

I finally remembered! Try here but note the waiting list.

David, how much does re-polishing cost? Seems like a huge effort for a rather undistinguished lens?

Coating changes the Summar from a very low contrast lens with a severe flare problem to a very low contrast lens without a severe flare problem. You might want to look for a good Summitar.

To the OP:
Buyer beware
I put a good deal of money into my Summar -- had it professionally cleaned which set me back $80. I tried the lens this past spring wide open at night. Ugh. The results were so bad that I put the lens away. Just tried it again yesterday in daylight stopped down alongside my Elmar. I am waiting to see if I like the results, otherwise I will be looking to sell it.

I would purchase a Summitar - which should be a better performer in many aspects. Plus, you won't have any problem finding a coated version.
