Where to purchase a drum scanner in the UK

Hello Ladies and Gents,

I just missed out an an Itek (ICG) 350i drum scanner on eBay for a ridiculously low price. It would take a whole host of those emojis to convey how annoyed I am at myself for being cheap.

Anyway..... Having missed out on this scanner has made me want to get a drum scanner even more.


I don't necessarily need anything as sophisticated as the Itek, my only constraint is that it can't be larger than the Scanmate desktop models or veritical ICGs. Something like a Hell scanner is out of the question.

Apart from eBay, where could I buy one in the UK or Europe and how much do you think I should pay?

I know the PMT has advantages, but to what extent does DPI matter? Would it be unwise to get a 2000dpi model? I rarely print larger than 30" from 35mm and 120. I'm leaning towards the Scanmate 5000 at the moment.

I'm a professional low-level software developer so the technicalities of getting these running on appropriate hardware aren't an issue for me.

Tim Parkin over at On Landscape is a drum scanning enthusiast (who also provides scanning services for other photographers, I believe) and he is based in the UK. So I would shoot him an email and ask him nicely if he has any suggestions re: types, and possible sources to try.

I was actively looking for a drum scanner in EU since September last year. Decided that it was too big a risk to have one shipped so I narrowed my search down to 1.000 km circle around me so I could test it and transport it personally.

Finally found one 100km away (after missing out a couple of days on one that was given away for FREE also nearby). I got Howtek 4500 for 550 EUR (my budget was 1.000 EUR). It works as it should, the 2 drums that were included are not in the best condition, though. Still looking for a clean drum. Anyone?

I posted a few WTB ads in yahoo groups dedicated to drum scanners, grossformatfotografie.de, dslr-forum.de and a few local photo forums...

If you have 5.000 EUR or more there are options to avoid all the hassle.

Regarding the resolution. 2000dpi does sound a bit on the low side. Isn't 30" a pretty big enlargement for a 35mm. Even for 120 you'd barely get there. Or does my math still think it's Sunday?

30" is as large as I'd go for square 120, yes. I don't tend to enlarge 35mm beyond 12x8, just bad explanation on my part.

I definitely don't have 5000 to spend unfortunately. I know you can definitely pick them up for less than this. I think it's more being luck that somewhere just wants it gone.

I'll try a wanted add as you suggest.
