Which lens hood for 35mm Summilux pre-asph?

Hi all,

I'm awaiting the arrival of a 35mm Summilux pre-asph. The lens did not come with a hood so I just wanted to know which hood fits this lens.

In addition, are there any issues with the hood blocking the viewfinder or using filters with the hood attached?

FWIW, as with all my lenses, the lens will be used with a UV filter most of the time (and an ND filter some of the time).

Version I took a 12522 ("OLLUX") bayonet-on hood. IIRC, this lens had 43mm filter threads.

Version II took a 12504 clip on hood (this lens had no filter threads, but took series VII drop-in filters in the shade).

I'm not sure which version mine is.

SERIAL # is 3474957. I'm assuming version II.

How do drop-in filters work? Can the hood come apart and a filter slips in between the two parts of the hood?

With a serial number that high it is the latter version.

It uses the latter version hood that seperates in two be unscrewing in the middle, and the series VII filter drops in. You screw it back together and relace it on the lens.

Where did you find a 35mm SUMMILUX (pre-ASPH) with that high a serial number (1988) ?.

This purchase was an Ebay win, 1983 German make. I did pay a bit for it so I will see how it compares to my current version Summicron...no doubt different character altogether.
I can't afford to keep both for too long though so one will appear in the classifieds in the not too distant future. 🙁

My favourite lens! I've found that more often than not, 49 mm filters (particularly thinner ones) will drop into the Summilux lens hood instead of Series VII ones.

That has been my experience too. I have ground some filters down to fit in the hood as well.

I also have one- ser#3600703, which is one of the last made with titanium finish. As my black aluminum hood had gotten dented and chipped, I asked Leica UK, who a few months ago supplied me with a titanium finish hood, part# 12453, which while identical in shape to the standard hood, not only matches my lens' finish, but is much sturdier (being made of brass) and scratch-resistant due to the finish. I am also sure that this is available in chrome, and possibly also black. I would very strongly reccomend that you try for one of these, as they should outlast the lens. I am certain that these are still currently available, btw.

Using without hood

For years I worked with the hood but it made the whole setup bigger and the hood got banged around a lot and now has many dents. I now am very happy just using a lens cap (think it's 42) and no filter. You'll love this lens.
