I agree the price to way too high. I bought my S2 on ebay for $300 about 2 yrs ago.The camera was in very good shape and the lens was pristine. I spent another $125 to have the camea and lens CLA by Pete Smith in florida and for around $450 I have what is a new S2. With the pound being almost $2.00 now you could buy 2 of these great cameras for the price on one in London. Good luck.

Did it - bought one, S2, now on it´s way in the post.....
Will let you know if it work and my impressions once I have tested it but it may take a couple of weeks since I am off travelling now for some time !!

I am sure your f2eyelevel has a nicer clack-clunk-kklinking sound(notice I didn't say noise)---especially with the motordrive(music to my ears) 😉

Back in 1990, I decided that I really preferred Nikon rangefinders for the kind of newspaper work I was doing. Getting an SP, S3 and full set of lenses, I found myself buying into a rapidly climbing market because collectors were in the process of bidding prices up -- doubling and tripling them in the course of a year. There was no EBay or online sales, so everything took place over the telephone, adding to the cost.

Also got an old meter "Weston Master II - Universal Exposure meter", model S141/735. Anyone who knows anything about that meter !?

The meter is ok the speeds are in weston where 400 asa is same as 320 weston, it dont work in the dark, only daylight, econo on batteries.
Dont force things if it dont move you are not pushing the button you need to push.
It is designed to work with the zone system if you meter a high light or shadow you set the o or u pointer to the meter lux level, if you take an average meter you use the arrow, needs some thought initially, perhaps you need to google the zone system as well.

I bought my S2 and S3 in Germany in 1988-89 and paid a lot extra for them compared to the United States (but I didn't know anything about the cameras back then and needed to see them in person).

100 asa is 80 Weston this should work with chrome film. The Weston was the Rolls Royce of meters in its day.
Some cells are 100% ok today some need replacing you need to compare yours with a known good meter allowing for acceptance angle, (which varies between the high and low speeds). The first symptoms are normally non linearity, compression in bright light, mine is still ok.

On the S2 there is at the top left and under the film rewind arm something calles SYNCHRO. with the options X, 60, 125, 250, 500 & 1000. What is this ?? I have found the SP and S manuals on the Internet but not the S2 and this functionality does not seem to exist on those models.
What is it and what setting should I choose for normal photos. I guess it has something to do with shutter speed ?? Can it be that the shutter speed is set by this if I choose x on the fast shutter-speed dial but what is the difference/use??

JonR, Congratulations. I use the 35mm F:2.5 on my Contax IIIa, and in a lot of ways it's my favorite lens. I'm like you a long time Nikon user, but always with F bodies. With my Contax I got a Nikkor 135mm F 3.5 that isn't compatible with the camera, but it's in beautiful condition, with a leather case, caps and hood and a recent CLA by Henry Sherer. If you're interested, drop me an email. I hadm't thought of selling it, but I have no use for it at all, haven't even thought of a price.

On the S2, also note that the shutter-speed dial rotates when you wind the shutter, then spins very rapidly when you fire the shutter. So be careful to keep you finger away or it could affect the exposure.
X-sync for flash works for the X-speed (about 1/50) as well as anything slower.

OK - many thanks to you all for the comments on choosing a Nikon RF - I have now taken my first pictures today and sent it in for processing!! Overall the photograhing experience was great - the 1:1 viewfinder was much better than expected even if the focusing will take time to get used to.

Now - may I ask for some more advice so that I understand the options going forward:
LENSES:
If I am going to complement the 5 cm lens with a wideangel lens or a short tele lens what do you suggest as good starting points to look for ?
I would prefer to stick with Nikon but are there really good other brands to look for as well ? I guess what I would primarily look for is something like 28-35 mm or so and maybe later something around 100-135 mm.
VIEWFINDER:
Also - what combinations of lens and viewfinder should I be looking for ? Are there Nikon originals that are still bright and work well and/or alternatives ?

Are there light meeters that one can put on the clip (where you put the flash) ? If so are there Nikon originals (but I guess they do not work well today) or more modern alternatives ?
