which one for travel and everyday use?

Well.. I'm tired of buy and sell gear.

Sold my MP, my M7, selling my M2's, III F, Mamiya 7II, Imacon 848... and buy a good MM or whatever for the future. I think I really need to stop, stay with one system and enjoy (I'm also studying photography at a private expensive school and I've realized it's difficult earn money working just with film).

What should I keep? M2 and a 35 or 40? or directly go for a CL with the 40?

I'm planning to go to India this summer for a long trip, so... will I miss the M? will I appreciate the Little CL and its portability?

How good is the Cron 40 with slides? and C41?

I liked the CL w/ the Minolta 40 from the CLE better myself. I have been able to run down a hiking trail at Zion to catch to my wife while changing film.. I could never do that w/ my m6.

I have always shot the 40 w/ either color neg or b&w so someone else will need to chip in on this.

If you're happy with the M2, confident in it, then I'd keep it.

Only uses film and seems to be running a successful business, what works for him might not work for you, but you never know.

I'm in favour of keeping one body from what you have and the M2 seems the most likely to me, plus a 35 and perhaps a 90mm. Those two will cover both people and places as the old Ilford film slogan said.

BTW, I've used slide film (B&W and Colour) in the CL as well as negative film (B&W and Colour) and never had any problems.

But you have and know the M2, the CL is a great camera but buying one nowadays could be difficult and expensive to get it back to the original specification, bearing in mind its age. You may be short of time and money if planning a summer trip to India...

im sure there are no wrong choices here. M2 + 35 or CL + 40. I wont go with M2+40 due to inaccuracy in framelines (even though we all know the M finder isn't that accurate from the start but i still prefer it to fit as close as possible, less guessing around the edges).
Remember to bring a good meter for both of them. Easiest for you would be sell the 40 and keep going with the M2+35. The CL isn't that much smaller. bring a backup though if it's a long trip, in case the M2 fails. Any good quality P&S or cheap Rfs like Olympus RC. That should keep you going for a long while. I know you are capable of great images with any gears 🙂 so keep what you enjoy using.

A 35+M2's probably a better choice, especially since the 35 would carry over more easily to other cameras if you choose to expand in the future.

If I'm reading this correctly, you're planning on only keeping one body? No backup? Doesn't sound ideal for a long trip at all.

For travelling I would use a good P&S like the Contax T3 and a Rolleiflex to shoot portraits !

If you want to stick with 35mm film and like 35mm FOV:
Contax T3 and a T as backup (or one with color, one with b/w film). Never travel with one body only!

Yupp, very happy, though I only use it for the odd wide-angle work. The CL...some will disagree here, but I would not head to India with a camera where I have to worry about RF calibration during rough use (the Contax T is tiny and easier to protect).
I tried a CL too, similar idea than you. Lovely camera, but did not trust it for hard use - and could not see its advantage over the T3.

Do not know. None of my Contax ever broke.
But I can tell you what happens when a Leica breaks. M6, M7, CL .. 🙄. I sunk more money into having Leicas repaired (exception: X1/2 - those have proven sturdy) than I spent on buying my Contax bodies.

Mechanical cameras being sturdier than electronics is a myth. And for the weight and size of a CL with lens you can take a T3 and T....again, never travel with one body only.

well after reading carefully, I've realized that you're right guys. So got a M6 and forget the idea of the CL.

Hi Bruno, since I saw your post about M vs Sony A7R:

Why M6? Would you not steer into some kind of (expensive) redundancy between your analog and digital bodies?

In your case I would consider a combination Contax T3 + Leica X2 for a compact travel setup, and A7R or digital M for the rest (I personally would go the Fuji or Sigma Merrill route though and use the saved money for something sensible).

If you want "more" camera than the T3, I would go to MF (Rolleiflex, GF670) right away. The M6 is nice, but a lot of money and weight for small negatives and expensive glass. There was a reason you sold yours in the first place, no?

Just read the thread again and will throw in that I used the CL for travel for more years than I care to remember until about 4 years ago when I started taking the much smaller P&S's but by then I was revisiting old haunts and not that intent on photography.

It's important to remember that on forums people tell you the worst and then you get overwhelmed by worries. Things do break but nowhere near as often as you'd think. Anyway, that's what back-ups are for...
