Interesting result ... according to the poll so far RF usage has increased.

Though ... asking film or RF users to identify themselves around here is a little like yelling out "Who likes free beer?" at a football match then trying to work out the percentage of actual drinkers in the crowd!

😀

Hi Keith,
Actually, it has dropped quite a lot.

I just discovered that a comparison with the 2005 poll is not directly possible. The first poll seems to have allowed multiple options to vote for, so that percentages add up to more than 100%. In the current poll, the percentages add p to 100%. Still, it gives you a current view.

I have to admit that since last summer I'm using much more digital than before. Mainly my Leica x1 due to small size is very oft with me, sometimes my wife's DSRL. Than a few times film, which is always nice.

I adjusted the 2005 figures so that the percentages added up to 100%, like the 2013 poll has.

............................ 2005 .... 2013
Large Format ....... 2.57% 3.08%....... similar
Medium Format...... 8.54% 13.22%..... increase
35mm Rangefinder.... 51.28% 46.26%... decrease
35mm SLR............... 12.82% 7.93%.....decrease
Digital .............. 12.82% 28.19%..... increase
Other Type ............. 11.96% 1.32%..... decrease

Mainly medium format - have used DSLR and 35mmRF in the last couple of weeks though. I'm just preferring MF B&W negs at the moment.

I have a rangefinder in MF though 🙂 Koni Omega

Question on another forum pushed me to investigate the photos I have in Lightroom for 2012-2013 so far. This is what I found, expressing how many images made with which camera by percentage of total:

M9 48.2%
X2 24.1%
GXR 16.1%
E-PL1 4.0%
E-1 0.5%
All film cameras* 7.2%

* Includes Polaroid SX-70, 6x6, 35mm RF and SLR, and Minox submini

As I have managed over past years to stay away from the 'better' digital cameras and only have GRDIII for snaps, my main camera is still Mamiya 6. I keep thinking of Rolleiflex FX (or even FX-N) but that would require major investment AND gear sale. But tempting it is 🙂

In 2005, I had a small poll, with these results.

Large Format ........... 3.23%
Medium Format RF.....10.75%
35mm RF.................64.52%
35mm SLR................16.13%
Digital Camera...........16.13%
Other type of camera..15.05%

I wonder how the distribution of votes differs in 2013.
We had only 16% using digital cameras as the main camera for weekend photography then.

I think if the poll not show 35RF on the top, then we must change name of this forum (rangefinder) :bang: 😀 😎 😛

Used the most: Leica film cameras and lenses

Next: Nikon film cameras and lenses

Third: Hasselblad XPAN II film camera and lenses

My spring project will be learning to use my Deardorff 5x7 camera that has sat idle for way too long.

Most of film bodies recessed as expected, by today, April 23rd. The percentage winner is digital. Though the film RF holds 45 % while the film SLR are gone down to marginal 7 %.

I voted film 135 RF.

With all its flaws, this poll shows the obvious switch to use digital cameras more frequently than what we saw in the past poll. It is also interesting that medium format cameras are seeing a come-back.

If I made a new poll that is independent of this poll, I would ask directly about film versus digital preferences. It would be also interesting to ask about preferences to use M 4/3 or NEX or Fuji digital cameras when someone has or could have a Leica digital M (8,9, ...).

Another angle would be to identify the reasons for leaving film behind as the Nr. 1 choice for non-professional photography. Is it cost or difficulty in finding a suitable developer/printer/scanner?
