If you like to shoot into the light, try out a Jupiter-8. In my experience the Sonnar-formula lenses do considerably better at managing direct light, though of course you can still induce flare without a hood.

How are the collapsable fed-lenses? I think they look so cute 🙂

Lens cap. A hood can be made from a black plastic coffee cup. If you get any holes in the curtain use a black silicone rubber to cover the spot.

The collapsibles (FED 50 3.5/I-22/I-50) are all the same basic formula as the I-26M: four elements in three groups in the basic Tessar-type arrangement; the J-8 is completely different, being a Sonnar-type with six elements in four groups. The downside to the collapsibles is that hoods are not readily available. I love my FED 50/3.5, but it's not as flare-resistant as my J-8 by any stretch of the imagination.

Thanks a lot! I have a friend who has a Zorki with a Jupiter. I'll see if I can use that for a roll or two before I look into getting one myself.

Don't try mounting an I-22 on a FED-2, as they don't fit. Get the I-10.
BTW, here is that photo I tried to post earlier, before I knew where Flickr hid the BB Code button. It's a Walz hood "For Sonnar", which makes it a 40.5mm on an Industar-26M mounted on a Zorki 1D/B.
I never had a bit of flare with this lens/hood combo.

There are a lot of 40.5mm hoods on eBay, many are perforated like this one, and some are angled as well. I have one of those, which is OK on FSU and Barnacks but is brilliant - nearly invisible in the VF -with a Leica M standard VF (Hexar RF in my case).
I have it mounted on my uncoated Sonnar, and it works well despite the lack of "Sonnar" on the hood 🙂

The Chinese make and sell a lot of them on ebay, just search on the filter size. I'd buy a Jupiter-8 in your shoes but get the other one cleaned when it arrives. A lot of them suffer from old age, meaning haze inside. (And a lot of them suffer from clowns who do it themselves and put a lens element back in the wrong way round... )

I normally use it on my Contax IIa Opton Sonnar, but like a lot of my gear, it's interchangeable. I got this one because it was cheaper than a new one. I'm not fussy about brand names.

What?! It was a kit lens. There is a small problem with collapsible lens - the lens focusin ring pin is slightly scratching the body when the scale is near infinity but that is a fixable problem.

I figured as much - which is why all the smilies. It just tickled my fancy. I'm the same with brands. Have even been known to interchange lens caps- my RF Nikkor that didn't come with a cap is now a Sigma 😉

Sort of. There was a special version of the collapsible 3.5 lens used on the FED 2. Like most 3.5 FED lenses it had a Leica-like aperture lever, but did not have the usual pin-and-socket infinity catch. The FED 2's lens flange is very thin, and most lenses with an infinity catch will jam before reaching the infinity setting.

The kit lenses for the FED-2 were the I-10 (early models), and I-26M (C model on up). The I-22 was a kit lens for Zorki cameras.

I do not argue. Just I do have different sources that claim it was a kit lens but not the only.
The problem with the pin is fixable - just adjust the pin to the shorter distance.

My copy of the FED 2 instruction manual shows what is clearly an Industar 26L on the camera and a plain Industar 26 on the cover photo.
I copied this page just to show an amendment to the book that might, perhaps, date it more precisely. Has anyone any idea of its date?

Apparently after his number PT5275, they were no longer used on the FED. And if you look at his FED-2 page, he never mentions the I-22 as being used on the camera, just the FED 3.5/50, and the I-26M. I've read in Meizenberg's that only the I-10 and I-26M were used.
