And this isn't?You're deflecting.
This is my first post in this discussion thread. So I would hope you wouldn not make the same remark to me. And I think Bob's comment was spot on. Do you have a past history here?

So what's the name and/or member name of the person you have a family connection to, and what's the connection? Because clearly you've spent enough time perusing the forum to have developed some opinions about some of the interactions between some of the members, and it would speak well of your good faith to be more forthcoming about this. While we're at it what's your name?
I apologise if I'm being fairly direct but I'm really not into playing games.

Let's be honest here, as people we gravitate towards likeminded souls, we seak out people we broadly agree with or at least have some common ground with. You don't tend to make a b-line for people you judge you'll have the least in common with when you arrive at a party.
On a forum with the arbtrary comonality of a likeing of Range Finder cameras, you are going to end up in conversation with people you don't share any other tastes, views or outlooks on life with, which is actually one of it's pleasures, but it does mean you are going to get some frictions developing.
I actually think in light of that there should be a little more argument than is generally allowed. The best threads are those that challenge ones own assumptions and I've learned more from those threads than the well behaved stick to the gear talk threads. Disagreement initself is not a problem as long as your respectful of the person and their alternative view.

I usually take myself off for a while when RFF starts to get a bit twitchy. I've tried other forums but they're either too quiet, too bitchy or just too restrictive in terms of discussions and content so I keep coming back here where, on the whole, it's a great place. A breaks as good as a rest as they say.

Then don't.
Someone said something earlier about deflecting. Who was that again?
I'm not playing games George. I asked you a couple of questions about as straight up as I possibly could. I don't mind if you don't wish to answer them, I'll simply draw my own conclusions about that just as others will.

Some of you folks should get a hobby. Using chatrooms to gather a posse for a session of internet bullying is not cool. You say on your info panels that you are adults. At least one of you claims to work/have worked in education. Stop acting like dicks.

This is not a game. Joe (the OP) asked "who should be banned?" and I reported bad behavior.
Here's some more:

I don't have any connection to any of that and until you posted the link to Purelight and I clicked on it, I'd never heard of it. I'm not buying into any of that although others might.
But I did ask you a couple of questions and you've just deflected those. I don't know why, and I'm not going to lose any sleep over it tonight, but, my own conclusion is you have got something to hide yourself, because otherwise there would be no need for the subterfuge. So I'm putting you on my ignore list, because I'd rather engage with people who I have at least some idea of who they are and their history at this forum, (unlike yourself, who clearly has a history you do not wish to disclose).

I find Godfrey's posting style highly personal, aggressive and antagonistic towards others, so much so that (not having realised he is a moderator) I tried to click "ignore".
I rarely contribute posts to RFF, simply because I see so many apparently innocuous questions being railroaded off topic, or because of the aggression and rudeness on display. It frankly amazes me when I see posters commenting on what a civil and helpful forum it is. My "ignore list" while not very long, is longer here than at any other forum.
FWIW, I think the forum could be more heavily moderated to address rudeness and aggression. But I also think moderators should be aware of the need for humility in positions of power.
I've never added anybody to my ignore list on this forum. Indeed I would say the forum is normally very civil - the only angst I've really seen is from people nitpicking whether so and so is polite enough, and in the past some heavy handed moderation that seemed to be influenced by personal opinion more than a need to keep discussion on track.
I do think though that a common problem with moderators (and especially new ones) is some feel the need to prove their worth by looking for something to moderate, even if it's not necessary. Which is another reason I believe the moderators should try to do as little as possible. If one gets in the mindset of trying to micromanage threads, slapping everybody who uses an impolite word, or thinking they're not being annoying by constantly threatening to close a thread if it goes off topic - that can wear out your welcome as a mod real quick. In fact more often than not it only upsets people and causes them to push back, ruining the thread by way of a sort of self fulfilling prophecy.
I think you want to be as hands off as possible. You're only there to save the day when you have to. Like a driving instructor, just because your side of the car has a steering wheel - doesn't mean you drive your student around the whole time - it's only there so you can swerve to miss the tree!

Gosh. That would be really embarrassing if a mod had chosen to hide behind another persona to defend his actions and inflame arguments so he could ban people.

I am not understanding this sniping and hostility towards Purelight?
I was / am a member there and have received no end of help (especially form Stewart /Sparrow - whom I love to bait and fence with a little myself)
Admittedly I have not been to Purelight in a while, but I am very spasmodic in attendance here. I am suffering from memory problems which are slowly, slowly clearing. But, I do remember help given and gratefilly received.
IMO, what we have in this thread is nigh on anarchy. Stephen, reach in and kill it and tell mods and lessers to get out and produce the goods.

I am finding this thread to be more and more bizzare. Half the time I dont understand where people are coming from. The other half I don't understand what people are saying. I don't think I am autistic and hence unable to understand other people. Is it just me? Why not just close this thread down? Cant we get back to talking about cameras and stuff.

This is what I find most the most frustrating attitude. Why must the thread be shut down? Are we children in danger of being corrupted? Why would you carry on reading a thread if it upsets you, it's not as if there aren't a hundred threads about cameras lenses and bags if that's what your after.

Shaken, so blurred
I'm very glad that Joe opened this thread, because past episodes of forum desaparecidos have left me with a bad feeling. Being even slightly more open about such things goes a long way with me. However, the way this thread is trending ... well ... it reminds me of why decent moderation is of great value to any internet forum.
