The value of the M2 is directly related to the name scratched on the back. "Eddie Adams" would carry a premium as would Bob Schwalberg (saw his camera go for Euro 5000 some years ago!!!! A beaten up black M2. However " John Smith" would bring the value down! My favorite engraving was on a Fed - reconfigurated to look like a Luftwaffen Leica III and re-engraved "Luft Hansa Eigentum" OK, if I had to write something in Cyrillic I would make mistakes too.

what if someone actually finds an absolutely rare piece of Leica gear (like a Leicaflex half frame) and it is an absolute bargain of a price - would you congratulate then?

Mine says "S. Siegal." Not too exciting I'm afraid.

Now THAT was really funny...

The only thing of mine with a name engraved on it is a 2003 Leicavit MP that Leica gave me. Probably as a thanks for creating a demand for the Rapidwinder or something like that (or to offset the guilt for copying my internal design!). Oh, then there is the MP TA-1 that was put together from a M2 and a M3 some years ago.

See to me that seems like a more logical response. I am all for letting people know that I like their choice of purchases. I am a classic Cadillac owner and when I go to car shows I talk to others and let them know that I like their cars by saying things like "wow, nice car" not congratulations. I thought it would be like that but I guess not.
And the Bah humbug was for the question. I knew that I would come off sounding like a holiday scrooge. I tried to lighten the load by attempting humor. Seems that many people here lack that based on the replies to the thread. People can congratulate all they want. I just was mulling over this while escaping the cold and thought others may have some insight.
thinking the congrats are due to the buyer's sudden epiphany that THAT watch is the best
Maybe it is that assumption that the buyer had an epiphany where the smugness comes in. I never had an epiphany before I bought my camera. It was just the right time and the right camera for the job that needed to be done. So far it has served me well and based on the reputation of the brand, should continue to do so for a while. To me, that is worthy of a "smart purchase" comment rather than a "congratulations"
Well I think youre thinking of it wrong. No one says congrats in the show of your Leica M thread as long as the person doesnt say "Look at what I just got". Don´t tell me if you went to a classic car show and you say: "nice car" and he says: "Yeah I bought it yesterday" you wouldnt say "congrats"?

nowadays most people would say - "how much did you pay for that, then?"

The best camera is one that still works!
Hey if you don't want congrats, why are you posting pics of your M2 in the 'show off your Leica' thread?
http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=887824&postcount=2221
I hereby retract the comments I didn't make in that thread.
Actually ... looking more closely at that pic I'm a little concerned that this particular M2 might be a Rusian knockoff!
The knurling on the rewind lever doesn't look quite right to me!
Congratulations for this particular Leica are on hold pending investigation.

OK, I can believe that. If somebody scrimped and saved and worked really hard to afford one, then that is indeed an achievement & worthy of congratulations
I bought my first Leica, an M2, a couple of months ago, and it wasn't an achievement. It was a gear purchase. But I hope it helps me to achieve something good.
Yep. congratulations are in order for me...It took me the last two years since being introduced to Leica to actually obtain one, albeit without a lens...
I really think that anyone can be congratulated for anything...like my children, I did not give birth so it was not an "achievement" but congratulations were certainly appreciated.
So, we are a civil and polite group of folks. Enjoy!

Will anyone congratulate me for resisting the urge to buy a Leica for 36 years? (I still don't have one...yet)
Actually, I say "Congrats" anytime anyone announces that they acquired a cool piece of gear that they are all excited about, no matter what it is and even if it's free (maybe especially if it's free). It may not be the correct word of choice, but I'm sure the recipient of the "congrats" gets the meaning.

it was $500. the camera needs a cla badly, but it's in better shape than i expected. all of the lenses are in excellent condition.
the summilux was the real prize in the lot. i couldn't tell what it was in the picture, i just assumed it would be a summaron. buying it seemed pretty risky to me. here is the description from the auction...
have a leica 35 mm camera made in germany part# M3-1038781 with carring case and extra lens. it in good shape have no use for it so happy bidding
not exactly confidence inspiring, but it worked out pretty well for me.
