Dunno about him, but I do it because I'm crap at it and know I'll get better. Even if I get really good at it I'll still be able to improve. Will this lead to frustration?
Hand cramps.

David Munson & dan denmark are right on.... It puts me right in the flow, feel like I'm "one with" what I'm photographing. Time doesn't exist, pure non-duality.

i photograph to try to create something unique.
i photograph to document...i have been shooting the same area of my city for years trying to capture a single image that clearly condenses/expresses my feeling about the place.
i photograph to feel.
i photograph to do something creative.
i photograph because i enjoy the process, the camera in my hand.
i photograph to have my creations on my walls.
i photograph to remember.

ok, here is your chance to spout some philosophy...
I think that you photograph because you like to.
Did I get it right?

Silva: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Silva: Fixer, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that.
[kneels]
Silva: I love the smell of Fixer in the morning. You know, one time I had a mountain of film to develop, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I stood up. I didn't underdevelop one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink frame. The smell, you know that Ammonium Thiosulphate smell, the whole kitchen. Smelled like
[sniffing, pondering]
Silva: victory. Someday this film's gonna end...
(apologies to Kilgore)

I've been thinking about this thread for a few days, trying to find the REAL reason I love photography.
My Kids.
I think there is a deep rooted love for the process of capturing something with a camera and the details within a photograph that was there long before I had children, but...
I photograph to document my kids' lives and experiences. I want them to live in the moment, so I will document those moments. They are still young, so I'm pretty much with them most of the time. Not sure what's going to happen as they enter teenage years and older as I they will be pulling away from us. ...Maybe they will continue to document their lives themselves. ...That would be pretty cool.
