Why do we see so few used ZI's for sale?

probably because they have a smaller market share than the Leica's and Bessa's... I'm not saying the ZM's aren't nice cameras but those that can't afford Leica buy Voigtlander and if you can afford a ZM you can afford a M6 or older Leica so many people go that route instead. And yes... those that can afford Leica but choose ZM instead probably really like them 🙂

I guess a lower market share, and they've not actually been on the market all that long compared to most Leica models. I got mine as it was a fair bit cheaper than an M6, and not wanting to start a flame war, on paper the ZI is the better camera, having AE etc.
I've sometimes been tempted with the red dot instead, and had a play with an M6 in a shop, it may happen one day, it may not.

Once you've got the best film rangefinder available (new) why sell it?
Unless of course you make the crazy decision to out it for an M7 so you can slum it with the Leica crowd! :angel:

And who knows, it may be the first of a new competitor in the world of modern rangefinders, not that it's really worth competing. Even so, it's a damn good camera.

I see Ffordes have a couple for sale at the moment but at £949 they're not that far off the £1200 brand new price. Looks like they keep their value better than a new M7 would - they seem to depreciate by 1/3rd quite quickly, then stablise.

Well they do pop up in the classifieds from time to time. Gotta be quick though, 'cause they sell fast.

I was going to sell mine, but my wife put a stop to that plan. Maybe that's why there's so few for sale, because of spouses like mine 😉

I'd like to know how the Z1 sells on a yearly basis compared to the M7 ... actual figures!
Anyway the general consensus of opinion is that Zeiss are primarily a lens producer and the Ikon is a mere hobby for them ... hence their lack of interest in a digital body! 😀

I actually somewhat disagree...
I think they fall into the more affordable category... I don't think if you can afford a ZM you can afford an M6. The exact reason I bought my Ikon was because an M6, M7 or MP were all way out of reach for me.
And I'll NEVER sell it... It's a wonderful camera! I'd imagine you see less of them for sale maybe because there aren't as many models to choose from (like M's and Bessas), AND because people who own them love them. 😀

Great viewfinder.. so hard to part with the ZI.
My only complaint is that it is tough to see the shutter speed LED when wearing glasses, or in bright light.

Put me in the camp of could afford a ZM but decided on a used M6 instead. I figured it has a larger user base with more repair people and more spare parts availability. Plus its a Leica 🙂

in the UK it is a non stock item for the main dealers. They sold well when they first came out and now its a trickle special order item.
I think there is a limited market for them. If they don't crop up s/h very often its because people don't want to sell them.
The ZM lenses are stock items so there is a market there which tells me the owners of ZM's are buying more lenses so they must be liking them unless all the lenses are being bought for other m mount cameras. We only have two official dealers in the UK.

I think it has to do with the fact that upper market rangefinder users are prudent and well informed with their selections. They do the appropriate research and are more sure of what they want and can expect from each of the rangefinder models available. The curious dabblers stick to fixed lens rangerfinders or bessa range as their entry to the rangefinder fraternity. Also forums like this one help people in making informed choices so generally those that choose an Ikon have their expectations met and hang onto them.
