Chemically, they're equivalent, no? TMax is cheaper too, so why is DDX the more popular dev?

Maybe people like buying products from Ilford rather then Kodak. Besides that the price difference is only a few cents per litter
Adorama
TMAX I gallon $13.95 =$3.67 per litter
DDX 5 Litters $18.50= $3.70 per litter

.... and freestyle has the Legacy Pro branded Tmax dev for even less dough. at about $10 per gallon.
I've tried it but now stick to the Kodak branded sauce.
It's inexpensive enough already. I use Tmax dev for the nice results with a variety of films rather than the price.

Interesting. Not in this part of the world (Australia). From the Vanbar web site (one of the few retailers in this part of the world):
DD-X $48.40 for 4L
T-Max $23.64 for 1USgallon (3.8L)
Prices in Australian dollars (1AUD=0.92USD, but somewhat variable)

From a post at photo.net 10 years ago. David Carper was an employee of Ilford back then.
"David Carper , Oct 24, 2004; 11:53 p.m. DD-X is the most similar ILFORD developer to T-Max, but it is still quite different. Speed is similar, with both giving about an extra stop. DD-X is sharper, but T-Max is finer grained (although you won't see a lot of difference until you start pushing). IIRC, DD-X times are a little longer, which should help you be more consistent with it.
David Carper"
Just wondering, if one wanted to dilute TMax developer a little more, would you expect the sharpness to improve?

I use T-MaxRS 1+9 but I can't tell if it is sharper than 1+4, I never made any comparison.
At 1+9 it is very economical. I use it for TMY400 and Fuji Neopan 400 and get full box speed on both film.

I've been using TMax RS because of TMAX400 @1600 and TMZ. Picked up some Delta 3200 and gonna see what happens in DD-X
