I'm pretty sure this was one I sold about 6 months ago for about $600, good deal, worked perfect, and was CLA'd.

ampguy, if that's right then this is actually the camera that got me thinking $600 was about what I should pay for a user M4-P. Wanted to buy yours but I couldn't organise US PayPal payment at the time and I've been looking on and off since. Now the prices seem to have gone up, oh well. Maybe I'll start looking at something else.

Hello,
M6 are falling sharply. Only the used MP's keep on line at 2.2k-2.5k$.
The only ones who are keeping head over watter are the silver chrome versions of M4-2 & M4-P, mostly wanted by collectors.
On the other hand, in fact, some times the prices margins are quite wide open, mostly because of new customers (probably resellers) from China or even Korea who are paying far more than the average prices.
I have the opposite feeling (sorry) that prices for common Leica film cameras, like M4-2, M4-P, are falling a bit since one or even two years.maddoc said:It seems that prices for M4-P's and also M4-2's in "used-condition" have gone up in the recent month...

I think that's a good target
I think that's a good target
you might have to wait a while to find these kinds of bargains though, they're definitely not falling, but are level if not increasing.
I've sold 3 M4-P's in the last 2 years, I just can't stop myself from buying them when they're under $500 or so and probably should be keeping at least 1 or 2 as they've already served as backups to my M6 with an external CV shoe meter.
As a data point, one dealer at the the San Jose camera show offered me $600 cash (more in a trade), and another dealer offered $550 cash. So that price range might be considered a wholesale type price level for an exc. functioning, OK/good looking M4P.
Another thing is that the dollar is currently weak, so Intl. buyers (as you note) will often offer more.
Thanks for your offer, I appreciate it, and am sorry you didn't end up getting one of mine here, I think I sold two here in the classifieds, and one on ebay.

I brought my for less 550 four years ago from Cal camera in CA. If M4-P could have gone more than 800, I would defintiely sell mine. Thanks for this thread. I didn't know that M4-P is worth that much now. Time to sell mine...

The dollar is so low that a lot of people can afford these prices. Converted into euro's it is not a bad deal.

If you want to get a good deal on a leica M, you have to work at it. I originally sold the above mentioned m4-P to Ampguy for less than 600. What happened was I wanted my 2nd M camera to be an M3. For 9 months I checked out e-bay looking for a excellent looking M3 for less than 500. I got an ex+ M3 DS for 429. All I wanted to do was recover the cost of the M3 and I sold the M4-P to Ampguy for about the price I payed for the M3. Ampguy had it cla'd and recovered and sold the camera in the best working condition for 600, a very good deal for that buyer. I cla'd the M3, had it recovered for an additional 100 or so. Now I have an M3, not a ding on it, that works perfectly for less than 550. The point is that you have to keep on top of the sale of the equipment if you want a good deal. I know who the most reliable sellers are on e-bay. However, I bought my M3 from someone who had great feedback but didn't specialize in cameras, So, I took a chance. But not much of a chance. I like to sell my gear on this forum becuase I really like the atmosphere here, and I basically just try to break even. I sold a cla'd Leica 111C w/ 28mmVC3.5 + metal VC 35 viewfinder for 475 a few months ago. The reason was I bought a 111F to replace the 111C and the 111F came with the lens and viewfinder. I came out a couple bucks ahead on that deal, but it was a great deal for my buyer. The deal I got on the 111f with the 28mm lens and 28 viewfinder was rediculous, underpriced by 150. So, look hard and ye shall find!

If I wanted to I am fairly sure I could buy an M4 today.12/8, for less tha 750 in reasonably good condition, meaning it would cost me less than 100 to get working perfectly. M6's are available for less than a 1000 if you look long and hard. I have seen that deal, M6 for less than 1000, at least 4 times in last 6 months.

There is an M2 on e-bay at 566 ending in 5 hours being sold by " Fine Used Equipment" An M4 at 660 being sold by " cuzandy" also tomorrow. I would post link, but I am a commputer illiterate and don't know how. Another M4, a really nice one, in less than 10 hours at 710 by "Wish -4-Leica" Possibly the best deal is a 90 Elmar C user, currently at 67, being sold by " limbert4me" in 14 hours. I could go one , but won't. You just need to do your home work. Lastly, If you REALLY want to buy something , make 1 bid in the last 4 seconds. All you need is a watch with a second hand.

Hi John
Hi John
Yes, I went back through my notes, and had an excellent transaction with you over a year ago for this M4P. Thanks again!
Looking at recent sales, I'm almost inclined to say prices are up for M4Ps, but am wondering if the sales out of the US and weak US dollar are part of that, and it's really just a flat trend?
In any case, certainly doesn't seem to be falling prices for these bodies.

I don't think as a general rule, that prices are going up on M4-Ps. There are always individual auctions that are outside the normal boundaries...some low, some high.
There are other factors here, too besides the camera itself: some sellers have little feedback, they don't know what they have so the auction is described poorly; they have poor photos of the items, some sellers don't ship internationally, etc. This will result in lower final price. On the other hand, some sellers have perfect feedback, great photos of the item, ship internationally; some sellers have reputations that result in up to $2,000 of paypal buyer protection; and some sellers simply have cameras that are in better condition; all factors which not surprisingly result in higher final prices.
Patience can result in some bargain purchases. M bodies are not rare; if you want a bargain, just be prepared to wait a little bit for all the right factors to come together.

Post Script on the equipment I listed last night as possible good deals on E-bay. The M2 , a nice one, went for 660 bucks; the M4 I referred to went for 792 bucks( a good deal, nice camera), and another M4, also nice looking went for 760. The auction for the 90 Elmar C is at 81 bucks with less than a half hour remaining. All 3 of the above M bodies looked great to me, but I don't need another one. Thats all folks!
