wide angle comparison

I did a comparison to learn more about the behaviour of my lenses and their differences.
Straight jpegs from the R-D1, contrast set to low. No filter settings used, I plan to get to the filter thing later.
The lenses compared are the CV Heliars 12 and 15, the old screwmount 21 and Ultron 35. And the Pasoptik 21 and the Canon 25.
Two sets, one with focus at about 2m, the other at 1m. More distant will come later because my camera is still a bit 'ill'.
First the 12mm, f5.6 and f11.
Vignetting is only a little. I should use a tripod for a better comparison. But this was a quick lunchtime test.

I just got this CV21mm, the original screwmount version. This is the first time out of the box for this little gem.

Compared to the CV21 this is huge. Filter size is 58mm!
f2,8; f4 and f8.

The smallest one. That alone may be the reason for never letting this one go.
It tends to flare with strong backlight.

f2,8; f4 and f8. Is it common for contrast to increase when stopped down? Looks like all lenses behave like that.

First bit from the other set: it is getting late.
Very strange thing: at f4 the degree of sharpness and unsharpness is very different. These two are completely different beasts!
The Pasoptik is sharper where focused and more unsharp elsewhere.
The CV is slightly less sharp at the focused spot (wide open, I know), yet more sharp than the Pasoptik elsewhere.
Pasoptik at f2,8 and f4, CV at f4.

I love my Canon 25/3.5, and I also find it flares with strong backlighting. Something I've wanted to look into, though, is the possibility that with such tiny glass elements as the Canon has, it may be hard to detect haze that would cause this effect.

This is the rest of the Proveniershof-series. I have used this location before for comparisons.
I have tried to keep the statue in about the same spot and relative size.
Now starting with the 35mm and going to the ultrawide.
The contrast differences are more clear, as is the bokeh difference.

I have done the 21mm's at 2,8 and f4 already. Here are the CV21 and the P21 at f8.
The CV still shows more overall sharpness.

Again, contrast difference. Not a lot of difference in vignetting.

The 12mm is amazing. Much less vignetting than the 15mm. I got this lens for the R-D1. It is still a verywide, but the perspective distortion seems much less than the 15mm on full frame. Ofcourse this lens is now 'only' like 18mm, but still.
At close focus, dof really is limited. The numbers of the houses on the left aren't legible anymore.

By the way, this is one of Haarlems 'hofjes', the first type of social housing in the Netherlands. There are a lot of these in Haarlem.

Is it right, that all pics are just right out of the cam? No de-vignettimg job afterwards?
Don´t you think that the pics are to small for comparing sharpness?

Everything is straight out of the cam. Low contrast setting. These aren't the best for comparing sharpness, but there is more than sharpness.
I can do crops of these for sharpness comparison later.
I will do a specific sharpness comparison later. My camera needs a service job.

Sorry, you was talking about sharpness at the pics. Okay. But I´m wondering, because my ColorSkopar 21mm/F4 (M-Bajonett) shows a lot more vignetting.

Thanks for the test. It seems that Pasoptik has more 3D feeling to it at the same F-stop, where CV while sharp and contrasty, looks flatter to me.

Hi Rainer,

I think the amount of vignetting differs a lot due to different lighting. I can't think of another explanation other that my sample is a special low vignetting one!

I agree, Krosya, about the Pasoptik. It is a keeper! I came across it just after buying the CV21 so now I have both. I may well sell the CV21.
