Nah...the DF did not sell well. Nikon has more pressing problems than upgrading their Edsel.

And how do you know this?

'common sense'.
'common sense'.
Really? So, you know what their profit margin on the camera was and how many they needed to sell in order for it to be successful? I would imagine they did not think it was going to compete with the D610 or D750. They knew it was their chance to sell to those who don't like typical DSLRs. If it was not a success, I think we would have seen it be hugely discounted by now and discontinued (like the Coolpix A).

Nikon keeps its sales figures for individual models secret. It lumps its sales as entire categories so unless you are connected with the right people at Nikon, you will never know.
So next best thing is common sense. Or an educated guess if you will. And ask the sales staff at Samys (big camera chain in California), B&H and Adorama. The peeps at Samys told me that no-one is buying the DF, but people are buying the D750, 610 and 810. The DF sales were satisfied by the first rush of people who wanted a camera with knobs n' stuff. Current sales of Nikon DSLRs are from those who want cameras that are more feature filled and useful. Like with up to date AF systems, video and resolution.

That makes sense, but doesn't mean that the Df wasn't initially successful. It would be insane to buy it for new price at this point.

Thing is we will never know if it was initially successful and Nikon will not reveal what those metrics would be.
What we do know is that now it is a shelf anchor. A super specialist one at that.

The DF is not even in the top 100 on Amazon's DSLR/DSLR package list!

Peter's description of Edsel indeed seems apt.

Unless you want one and can find the money for it.. . . It would be insane to buy it for new price at this point.
After all, how many people will argue that buying a new Leica is "insane"?
Ford sells more cars than Morgan. This doesn't mean that I (or many others) prefer Fords to Morgans. It just means that more people can afford a Ford, or find it more practical for their day to day lives.

Every Nikon wedding shooter would buy a DF2 if it had the D750 or better AF and 2 card slots. It could even keep the 16mp sensor, that's the sweet spot for weddings anyway.

I didn't mean it in regards to its price tag and if you can afford it but they sell for less than 50% of new on the used market.

Are any other 3.5 year old cameras on the list (in the DF's price range)?

Fair enough. But next to a Leica they aren't that expensive new.I didn't mean it in regards to its price tag and if you can afford it but they sell for less than 50% of new on the used market.
Then again, next to an Alpa, a Leica isn't that expensive new, so I suppose that isn't much of an argument.

Check the list. I see the 810, pro Canons, D750s etc

That's to be expected. They haven't been replaced and are mainstream cameras. The D750 was released after the DF, the 810 too. The D800 isn't on there I would think.

Do many professionals buy their cameras off Amazon, or is the list skewed toward the lower cost entries?

Okay. I'll bite. Why?
High end wedding industry is trending heavily toward film cameras and manual controls. See the absurd price of the contax 645s etc.
