I think the first couple purchases are the most difficult decisions. Once you get through that psychological barrier, you will soon forget about the price tag.

Do you have a family, children attending school, saving concerns for their future, college, installments of a house to pay? Some do not have psychological barriers in their minds, they have real financial barriers sometimes causing them sleepless nights..

I'm not sure, but if the only way of seeing any difference with the current summicron is by squeezing the last atom of the quintessence of sharpness from this new lens and will require a 10kg tripod, mounted on a special rail to dampen the vibration of ants in the next block, a special 150m soft release that allow the photographer not to induce any vibration in the camera, and a special course at Solms of Yoga and apnea for the critical moment of the shutter pressing, all this by the holy church of the portable unconspicious cameras that allows to be "in the action", I really wonder...

How do you say in German: "folks, thanks really, we appreciate the effort, but you shouldn't have" ?

(just 2c out of a 7200$ budget for a good standard lens)

I get a kick out of the apologists for the wealthy who think nothing of dropping this kind of money on a lens (or watch, or pen, etc.).
The wealthy obey the dictates of Consumerism as much as people who shop Walmart. What makes it more disgusting for me is the self-satisfied, unapologetic privilege it speaks of: I got mine, you can go %#^@ yourself.

I know a lot of very wealthy people (who shoot Leica), and not a single one of them has this attitude, not in the least. Anecdotal for sure; there must be a few out there like this, but it's definitely not the majority.

Indeed.

Many of my favorite black and white Leica photographs are hardly in focus and have blur due to subject motion. I can't think of any of them where I think to my self "add some additional sharpness and I'd like this photograph so much more."

Wrong.. the new Summicron's optical formula is specially calculated for hand-held "panning" type photography in color so that the colors will not mix with each other due to apochromatic feature 😉

Virtually no professionals, which is what I meant when I said I couldn't afford one because I'm a photographer, buy new Leica gear. I have two M6 bodies, both bought used. No way will I even consider buying anything new from them. Ever. Even if I won the lottery. Their pricing shows a gigantic contempt for those who make photography their life's work, and I refuse to support it. I make sure my Leica purchases do not benefit them one cent.

Ouch, lots of hard feelings towards a commercial company,...that can't be very productive. It'd be more useful to stop buying petrol because countries are being destabilized to be able to get it cheap, or computers because of the working conditions of those who build them, or groceries because of the crap they put in it or the way it's produced. Supporting a company that doesn't support artists is small beans in my book.

This does seem to go in spirit of making their products more of a niche collectors item, like expensive Swiss watches. I wouldn't be supprised if this is meant to be a limited edition run only. Hell the limited edition of this camera is $50,000 according to dpreview

Its not small beans to professional artists. Why should we support a company that won't serve us? I'd rather support those who do. No different than refusing to eat at a restaurant with expensive food and poor service. Our money is our power in a free market economy. Intelligent people realize that and make use of that power.

You're painting with a pretty broad brush here...
Not every rich guy is an a**hole.
Not every 'artist' with an ironic belt buckle is righteous.
