Even though I hate winter, I do manage to get out and photograph in freezing conditions for hours at a time without any major mishaps except for frozen fingers. However, this year I've managed to have two films break in the camera(s) while photographing in subzero temperatures.

Another reason to ban winter in my books.

. . . . if you never had the joy of motoring on a vintage snowmobile with other like minded individuals on their old sleds, then yes - Winter must be bummer.

Winter? The colder the better We have very distinct and different seasons and I love that - keeps me here (I could do with less November). This year, however; warm, wet, dark, grey. Have used my skis once and it´s soon March. Phwew!
This, cold afternoon light a couple of years ago.

Being as I am from Minnesota, I know a lot about the brutality that Winter can heap upon us. I know the beauty it can bring as well. Sadly it lasts far too long in many places.

I propose a new option for the poll: "Winter is Awesome! It should be allowed to last 4 weeks."

Winter is just part of the cycle. It provides different challenges and opportunities to photographers. It can be very dramatic as far as conditions and lighting are concerned, so use winter to your advantage. Personally, I'd be bored stiff if I just had wall-to-wall sunshine every day.

NY just ain't the same without you Cal 🙂

Jerome,

Thanks. My reputation is that I now get compared to Luis Mendez because I get seen around so much. In a way that I'm a walking tourist attraction and one of the reasons that tourists come to New York. LOL.

At work this black IT guy asked if I live in Harlem because he's seen me around uptown so much. While Luis Mendez can be frequently found nearby outside B&H and Adorama, I find that I have micro NYC Meet-Ups inside Adorama and B&H. For some unknown reason I keep on running into Helen Hill who gets around a lot also.

When I go to B&H or Adorama it is a lot like when Norm enters the bar "Cheers." LOL. Everyone seems to know my name.

When are you coming for a New York visit? BTW I recently bought a black paint 0.85 MP.

This winter has been stupid cold and snowy in Minnesota with no mercy. Even the usual suspects who in the past were prone to say "it's Minnesota that's how it is in winter," are starting to complain.

I'm obsessed by the thought of wearing shorts and t-shirt on a sunny Yucatan beach where the only thing white on the ground is sand, and the only thing cold is the beer in my hand.

Here we are in northern Connecticut (yes, it's small, but we do have it divided into zones!) at the end of February, and it's well below freezing. Remarkable. But I like it. What I dislike about winters around here is when a nice deep snowfall gets ruined by turning over to rain, or rain comes along a couple of days after. When that happens, things get all slippery and the sodden snow becomes too heavy to shift, or it then freezes into something bulletproof. No good for outdoor activities, and not very good for picturetaking either.

Nothing like a glorious clear and cold day (or night) with a fresh snowfall. I can understand how when it's grey for days or weeks on end, that can get pretty demoralizing.

I look at it this way, ultimately -- if summers where you live are worse than winters, then you need to move. Hot, humid climates don't make for good quality of life. And keep in mind the "cold climate" theory -- human progress over the milliennia has originated where it gets cold in the winters, not where it's hot.

Jerome,

The MP is mighty cool. I have it rigged out with a black paint TA Rapidgrip, black TA Rapidwinder, and an extra heavy chrome 50 Lux ASPH.

Without winter there can be no Spring or Fall and that would be a real bummer. However, I vote for the 4 week version starting before Christmas but AFTER I have the decorations up, and then ending about two weeks after Christmas so I can comfortably take the decorations back down. 😀
