What makes a perfect camera? Is it the potential of what it unlocks for you? (ex: ability to capture candle walkers at night?) Or is it simply an enhancement to a tool you already have?
I love photography. I love cameras. I love gear and the sexiness they exude. But what makes a camera a perfect camera? To answer that question, I look at my favorite photographs and ask what do they have in common? Is it field of view? Is it a specific style? Medium?
Next, I look at photographs that I enjoy taken by others. What do they have in common? With these answers in hand, I was able to determine that I continue to enjoy having an optical viewfinder; that having the connection with the subject is critical for achieving my vision. I also found that I like grain and pastel colors. For me, continuing to use film was my answer. For when I need immediate results, I have my M8, Sony Nex and D300. Not cutting edge, but it works for me.
Unfortunately, this made me realize that I already have my perfect gear. It doesn't change my lust and desire for new and shiny things, but it does allow me to take the money I would have sunk as an investment into the new body and justify continued operating expenses for using my film bodies.
Color me jealous if you do get the RX1. Looking forward to your photographs either way!
