I think the M10 should offer a few key features and improvements that indeed would make waiting for it really worth it. Better screen, better high iso, live view are enough reasons for me. However, if all this turns out to be false, then I'm sure used M9 prices will not be more expensive in a couple of months than they are now. Therefore, I am waiting.

It's like computers, where do you jump in. When you wait for the next model there's another around the corner so do you continue to wait.
Besides availability may not be for months and then you may pay a premium to get one. Also I've never seen a digital camera other than P&S that have come out without a ton of bugs that needed fixed. Leica's track record for bug free digital gear isn't too good. Are you willing to be a beta tester with your money? Do you even know if you'll like the new M10 if it actually comes out in a couple of months?
I delayed till I felt the M9 was pretty much debugged and finally bought one last week. I felt the time was right and used the above logic regarding the M10. I don't know if it will be the camera for me and how long till it's debugged. So far I have no regrets I bought it.
I purchased a new M9 at a very attractive price from a US dealer and was a US import. Quite a few dealers are selling new as either demo or used but have full warranty with Leica and 0 frames on it. This was the case with mine. I saved a substantial amount too.

Dear Roger, why would you need pain de mie when you can buy an excellent baguette?
Well... Yeah... But there are some truly awful baguettes, too, and there are times when I fancy a toasted sandwich. In which case I slice the bread myself, ideally from a gros pain.
Oh, the pain, the pain...

I'm quite satisfied with the M9. Looking ahead I don;t know that an M10 would offer me anything- and if it does offer some hybrid/electronic VF I can't imagine that I would want it at all.
I can print well oversize easily with the M9 and Perfect Resize when needed. I don't really use an ISO higher than 800 or 1000 very often at all, and despite having to carry & futz with an ND filter I'm happy enough with a low ISO of 160.
I'd say go for it. In the end it will likely be the most film M like FF body we'll ever see.
I'm hoping to see an M10, R10, S10 and X10 in September!

If an M10 is released in September it doesn't mean to say the M9 will be dropped, it may well be kept on as the 'cheaper' simpler brother for people who prefer that to the full high tech M10. So the price of an M9 wouldn't go down. Leica often use these occasions to put prices up.
But the delivery of the MM is delayed until September as well, so sales of that are going to be destroyed if Leica do announce an M10. People will prefer to wait until March next year rather than spend money on a dedicated B&W camera in September, and that in all probability will be exceeded for outright B&W quality by the M10 anyway. If an M10 is announced. I think Leica know their sales of MM's won't be affected, hence the delay, because they know the date won't clash with the announcement of an M10, but instead it will be an EVIL camera system.

Good logic. I have no idea if you're right or not, but what you say, makes sense. My bet is EVIL plus something else (S3? R10?). Again, I have NO inside information. Hello,
I really want an M9. Well, more specifically a digital M camera with a full frame sensor. I'm aware of some of the hang-ups that some people have highlighted about this camera (high ISO, battery woes etc.) but have decided I'm willing to live with the short comings.
Im sick of using a DSLR. I like my X100 but would love to use my M lenses, (with their native FOV) and am no longer interested in using film. M9 is the only option at this point.
The crux of my question is this: Is it foolish to buy an M9 or M9-P now, 3 years into its product cycle? Will a new M camera be released that will make it obsolete within 6 months?
M-9 owners; are you happy with your cameras?
Regards,
Harry.
It's only a mistake if you don't use it.

1) I couldn't afford a new M9 when it was released.
2) I won't be able to afford a new M10 when it is released.
2012 was the year when I was able to afford a (barely) used M9-P. Happy? You could say so.
My wating game ended when I had an epiphany regarding #2 above.

I suspect that whatever the M10 brings, waiting a few months will ensure you make an informed decision. I can also see that the M10 might not be all some are hoping for and that the M9 might feel a better buy than it does today.
A lot will depend on the price of the M10 though. If it is $10K, it might reduce the number of M9 users offloading and so leave used prices somewhat higher than the optimists might hope. I recall M8.2 prices doing quite well after the M9 was introduced, while it remained in production, then dropping hard. Although there are optimists who hope that Leica will reorientate itself towards real world users, I cannot see that happening. $8k for the M9 derived MM makes that plain: the M10 isn't going to be cheaper!

Harry,
the only question you really need to answer for yourself: Will the M9 be sufficient for my needs?
If the answer is YES, then buy one, don't wait.
It will be sufficient even when the next generation might even be "better" what ever that means....if more features mean more complicated, I guess not a lot of M9 users will make a switch.
If the answer is NO, then don't buy it at all.

Why not wait until the M10 is available second-hand? Why not wait for the M11...

Normally I'd agree with this, but if we're talking about waiting a month and then being able to decide based on more information, that surely makes more sense. The M9 may well be sufficient, but that can be said of any camera until it's replacement is made. Many people bought the M8, and then decided they wanted an M9. That may or may not be the case with the M10, users won't know until they see it, but as that time is fast approaching, it would seem odd to not at least wait and see.

If someone really, honestly answered the question, the camera will be sufficient even after all the marketing hype about the next and the next and the... version has been vanished.Normally I'd agree with this, but if we're talking about waiting a month and then being able to decide based on more information, that surely makes more sense. With the extreme speed of development in electronics the "life cycle" is becoming incredibly short - IF YOU BELIEVE what marketing is telling you.
If the M9 is a great camera today ( I DO believe it is for MY needs) then it will be a great camera still in a couple of years, simply because it is good enough already.
Don't jump into the hamster wheel of more Mpix, higher ISO, higher frame rate. Learn to distinguish between "nice to have" and necessary needs for your purpose. The M9 will not be the latest after the M10, yes....
